Awning fitting help please!

Just got a lovely secondhand (no instructions!) Soplair type full awning for our '99 Puck and have been out in the garden sorting & identifying all the bits prior to a little test run at the weekend. Have mostly established which bits go where but am unsure how this bit (see pics) is supposed to fit to the Puck? It is for the central roof pole and the spike goes up througj a eyelet in the awning roof but where is the flat part supposed to sit?? I'm guessing on the Puck to lift the awning roof, but where?
There is no bracket centrally on our Puck but there are two screws in the awning rail where something may have been originally?

Anybody else seen this kind of fitment and can shed light on how it attaches? Thanks in advance!

Sarah

The awning fitting instructions are Here below the picture of my 'Bourgogne'. They all go together in the same fashion but the diagram shown is for fibre poles whereas yours are alloy.

The bit in your picture simply sits in the awning channel and is an alternative to the spike that locates in a holed fitting screwed in the rail (obviously removed from your caravan.) This can be seen in the frame diagram.

These instructions may also help (enlarge to read)

Once you have the frame assembled, you may find it useful to colour code all the joints with insulating tape but when you've done it a few times it becomes second-nature.

Got it from someone on this forum after deciding that we needed a little bit more space in our Puck!

Brian may well be right in the above statement but on our van we have one of these:-

and the flattened end of the centre short pole on our Clairval awning sits in it.

If you do need one of those then Pete (Pepe Le Pew) is your man for he knows what they are called.

Thanks so much for the reply! So it just sits in the top of the rail against the roof? I did think that might be it and tried it there but was worried it might scratch the roof or damage the channel? I'm assuming the weight of the awning sitting on it will just hold it in place?

That was my understanding, Sarah, until Roger mentioned an alternative fitting and the squashed end of your fitting is marked which suggests that it may have located into some sort of bracket.

Can you contact the previous owner for advice?

If not, perhaps Pete can help? He is being very nice and helpful at the moment. I'm worried that he may be ill.

Aha!!!! Now that little bracket thingy could be the answer!! The bottom of the flat part has black marks on it like it has been slotted in to something......Pepe Le Pew - can you help with a part name please? And where can I find one?

Or, alternatively, your tube may simply have been squashed flat in a vice and that has marked it.

If you look at the Soplair frame diagram, you will see that the one they show has an offset to keep it away from the fibreglass while yours is straight and therefore could damage the roof. Yours could easily be offset by bending it in a vice.

Also, at the bottom of the frame diagram, three identical mounting brackets with circular holes are indicated which suggests that the flat end was an alternative means of support.

From the gap between the screw holes in the picture, it does look as though a bracket like the one on Roger's van has been fitted at some time.

It's called a footman loop, you could protect your van by wrapping some duct tape or inner tube around the swaged end

Thanks all of you!! Really appreciate the help!

Will try local hardware place tomorrow - I'm thinking metal would be preferable to plastic for the footman loop?

Thanks again

My Soplair awning also has a squashed/pinched short centre pole. I've only had it short time so only erected it twice, but it appears to slot into the channel below the awning rail. It sits quite snugly, and I can see faint wear marks from previous use age. The instructions are a little woolly but Sarah I think that you and I have both come the right conclusion in the first place - yes it simply slots in and sits vertically. The other poles on the far left and the far right support the most weight.

It did make me scratch my head the first time I put the Soplair up, trying to work out how the heck everything fitted together. It's very good when up though, fits well and doesn't leak. I've clearly labelled the poles now. But it's not like a 'standard' awning or tent that I've used before - blame it on being old and French!

Edit - does this help?
