Those are instructions for a classic awning Suzy. Thanks for posting. I've linked it to our picture gallery.

The piece marked "palette" would appear to fit into the awning rail as the "crochets" - hooks - on the two outer supports are described as locating into holes in the fittings on the caravan. If the central rod were designed to fit into a Footman loop then surely this would have been mentioned in the instructions?
Interestingly, the flattened end of the "palette" is shown as offset which leads me to think that the OP's fitting has indeed been modified by crushing it in a vice. It doesn't look to me to be a factory-made part.
I think Agger's suggestion to put a piece of bike inner tube or insulating tape around the base to protect the van is excellent and will allow the awning to be used until a suitable Footman loop can be obtained and fitted.

My Soplair awning also has a squashed/pinched short centre pole. I've only had it short time so only erected it twice, but it appears to slot into the channel below the awning rail. It sits quite snugly, and I can see faint wear marks from previous use age. The instructions are a little woolly but Sarah I think that you and I have both come the right conclusion in the first place - yes it simply slots in and sits vertically. The other poles on the far left and the far right support the most weight.
It did make me scratch my head the first time I put the Soplair up, trying to work out how the heck everything fitted together. It's very good when up though, fits well and doesn't leak. I've clearly labelled the poles now. But it's not like a 'standard' awning or tent that I've used before - blame it on being old and French!
Edit - does this help?
How interesting.................I am curious where you got that image......................its my handwriting on there listing where the poles fit.

My experience of these things is limited only to what I had to contend with on our Walker awning, but it's a very similar arrangement.
I was trying to see on the photos how the tube with the squashed end (and the one with the plastic wingnut into which it slides and which presumably allows vertical adjustment) locates in upper part of the short gable pole (the bit with the spike on the end). Is it held in there just by the weight of the awning pulling down?
To the OP; If you want to use a footman's loop type bracket (the kind on Roger's photograph) you'll need an insert with a proper tongue on the end instead of that horrible flattened thing.
I've got a loop you can have for nothing. A kind soul on here sent me it when I was sorting my awning out, and I ended up not using it. I've also got some of the correct size stainless steel raised countersunk screws to go with it if you'd like those too.
The other alternative - and it's the one I opted for - is to replace the flattened tube insert with one with a spike on the end. This will enable you to use a third awning bracket like the two outer ones already on the rail.

Footman Loop
Of course, now we know what it's normally used for, the name makes sense.
I had a brief search earlier, it's not a boating part but a carriage driving part :- https://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?fr=mc...&p=footman+loop
However, they come in various sizes and I can't find a UK Carriage Company that supplies them. Perhaps someone else will strike lucky.

My puck never had an awning rail fitting in the middle I think I just put the flat bit in the awning rail after the awning was already there .............

Mark at Lechlade showed me the apex pole (when I bought caravan and awning from him)
and demonstrated that it sat in the awning rail, the three cast alloy loops were fitted as
standard but not the strap bracket which is a much better way of doing it.

Regarding the fixing of the short pole, this question is academic but so as not to cause confusion with the rest of the build, can we establish which shape of Puck awning you've got Sarah?
This shape:- g2p1026-Morphy-s-Puck.html
or this shape:- g8p167-soplair-awning-for-puck-age-unknown.html

Hi all!
Oh I'm so confused with all this awning malarky!
So, yesterday I went looking for a footman loop....blank looks from local hardware store, slightly more success at local chandlers although the one I got, although the right size, doesn't fit I've discovered. It seems because of the shape of the awning rail which slightly overhangs at the top and the footman loop is flat then it won't sit flush on the rail.
So....I sent a picture to AL who said they have the exact thing in stock. Seems the screw holes in the bracket are positioned slightly ofset so it stands out more and away from the overhang.
I agree, the flattened section of pole I have, does look a bit rustic & homemade but on the pole diagram I downloaded from the gallery section it gives the option of a spike or a flattened piece?
The awning I have is the same shape as Morphy's one.....
Thanks for all the help so far!!
Sarah

You definitely need the check strap bracket for that type of gable end pole. I have one with my glass fibre pole set. The flattened part of the pole is set at and angle so that it sits vertically. Aaron's frame layout shows both the original spiked pole and the later flattened poles as options.

So this is what I did at the weekend....I used the dodgy ill - fitting loop that I picked up at the local chandlers and stuck it on the van to see if it would work.....and it did! I think a proper one as shown in the other photo above would work better but I was pretty chuffed the awning didn't just collapse!
Coincidentally, a friend of mine was also testing her new Vanderhorn awning at the same time and it too had the flattened tube but with an added step up at the end which just slid into the rail. Looked like it had been folded a couple times in a vice to achieve this. Didn't think to take a pic but will next time.... Thanks for all the invaluable help folks!!
