Pop top roof damaged

Totally devastated I took our troll to a festival where I stayed with a friend, she helped me to put our roof down asked her to make sure the fabric was not rooked into the roof so it would not get caught. Took it away for the weekend and and there is a rip in the roof when we have put it up where it has got caught! image.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)
I am close to tears as I know this is not going to be an easy fix any ideas?

Don't cry . It does not look too bad. Can easily be sewn. Have fixed worse damage on dresses. As it's a v shape is not too bad

Oh that's a shame and I can appreciate how you must feel.

The canvas can be replaced without too much difficulty. Agger had his out to re-proof it so, going on his claim to be useless at all things DIY, it can't be that difficult a job.

The options would appear to be to remove the old canvas and use it as a template to have a new one made (expensive) or, have it patched professionally by someone skilled in sewing canvas, such as a sail maker.

I hope you manage to get it sorted out without too much damage to your bank balance.

That makes me feel better but how do you fix it without removing the roof and will it effect it waterproofing? Can you get the matching fabric to make a patch! I have result to wine therapy!

will have to try and see how hard to remove as if possible I would rather it look like a neat fix than a bodge job! Will have to research when I get back home? Moral of the story no one except me and the hubby touch the roof!

We all learn a lesson . This one just a painful one. And one I have now also learnt. Thanks to your pain.
It can be sewn quite neatly with a zig zag stitch. Then rewater proof. That's what I would do.

I was quoted £180 - 200 for an all new colour of my choice sunbrella fabric canvas.

Most sailmakers, chandlers, even a local seamstress could patch it, but they'd want it out!

Easy peasy and I'm the worlds worst diyer Derek follows a close second

Wait until you have time and NEVER trust anyone else to do a job that you know you should of done

Just a thought, does your pop-top shockcord need replacing? I once drove hundreds of miles with part of our canvas exposed to the elements lying on the roof. The shockcord had become limp with age and use and wasn't pulling the canvas under the roof when it was pulled down.

I wonder if that's why your canvas was damaged?

"become limp with age and use and wasn't pulling" you can get tablets for that

Seriously though you raise a good point and it's worth everyone checking to make sure

How awkward for you both, just a point tho' even if you have brand new super strength shock cord, it puts much less strain on the bellows effect if you have the door open when you pull the roof down any one who owned an old Beetle will know what I'm getting at, it needed an almighty heave to close the door with the windows wound up, much less with a window open. It's probably something to do with air pressure, but as I gave up studying physics 40 odd years ago my mind may well be wandering. A handsewn patch repair with a sailmakers,/leatherworkers needle followed by a re-proof looks to be possible it is only a small pinch cut. Let us know how you go on.

If your looking at a self repair? Maybe buy some fabric in the colour of your choice, maybe to match a centre line of herzim or other outer colour and put a full width flap? on. I reckon that would be better than a patch? Just my 2p worth

I had the same thing happen to me, it was the shock cord, I think they should be replaced every 5 years. The repair I did was with a product called Tenacious tape, which is a glue on patch with a special adhesive, and after 3 years of hard use its still there.

Here's a link:- https://www.mcnett.com/gearaid/tenacious-tape#10691

Looks like it's available in the UK from many sources including Amazon and eBay.

Didn't I just read "Agger had his out and re proofed it"? Maybe AC should try that. You could give him a demonstration of your technique!
