Hi Randa, thanks again for your advice. You mention extra side mirrors, I didn't think these were needed with an Eriba. Do you need them even though Eriba's are narrower?
This is from a post I made a few months ago. It might help.

Zitat
what the law says is ambiguous by the use of the word "may".
...
"you may need to fit suitable towing mirrors."

I think the ambiguity arises because the law doesn't know what mirrors your car/towing vehicle is already fitted with. The law says only that you must have adequate rear vision. If you already have mirrors that give you this, then you're ok. If not, then you are required to modify your car so as to achieve it. It's the "if/if not" that gives rise to the "may", and therefore the ambiguity.

We could then go on to dicker about what constitutes "adequate", but I'm sure there was a diagram posted here a while back showing sightlines and blindspots, so it's not too difficult to work it out.

For my part, as long as I can see where the Eriba's nearside wheel is relative to the kerb, then I'm ok. No matter how I adjust the RAV's n/s mirror, I can't see it, so, never mind what the law says, I need at least one additional mirror.

Hi, thank you for your advice. We have a Honda CRV with pretty big mirrors so I am hoping they will do the trick. If anyone else tows with a Honda CRV advice would be appreciated. Ours is a 2005.....

Hi Charlotte.

Her's a link to an interesting article on Caravanwise including the diagram that Wordspace talks of:- http://www.caravanwise.co.uk/caravan-tip...ng-mirrors.html

Also there's plenty of previous discussions on here on the subject. You can read more if you type "towing mirrors" into the search engine.

Welcome Charlotte

and congratulations on the purchase.

Tony & Frances

Even in the latest Practical Caravan magazines the so called experts still claim that towing mirrors are a legal requirement!
I think Millenco even state it in their adverts.
The legality is all about angles of vision at specific distances. You may well be legal without them BUT are you prepared to argue that with a roadside policeman and defend it in a potentially stressful situation?
Also I think, many of us have fitted mirrors to avoid such an issue but then found that they enhanced the driving experience.

When I wrote that answer in the Spring we had a RAV4. We now have a CRV, the same series as yours, and like you we tow a Triton. My opinion is still the same, although it is true that the CRV gives a fractionally better view of the caravan's sides. You could reasonably argue that extended mirrors aren't really necessary. The only guide - since the law is clearly unclear - is to try it and see how comfortable you are without mirrors. Personally, I would go for them, if only for the reason Frantone gives.

I use extra mirrors and they do make a difference, and as tone says do stop plod pulling you over for a look.

Towing mirrors allow you to see areas of the road behind that are blind to ordinary car mirrors. If they didn't, why would anyone fit them or indeed manufacture them?

I certainly wouldn't want to join fast-moving traffic on a French autoroute or dual carriageway without my left-hand extension mirror.

Hi Charlotte, we have recently changed car to a CRV. Although hubby was quite happy driving with towing mirrors I decided to play safe. I'm not sure that they are any real improvement to the towing experience but I didn't want to find myself arguing the toss in French with a gendarme or even in English with the boys in blue over here. For that reason only we bought a pair of Milenco Aeros.
Julie.

Nice to hear from you from Derek and Carole.

Oooh mirrors????That is a moot point and I got several different ideas, suggestions and thoughts about them from Eriba Folk at the last rally. It is up to you I think but you check. I acquired some free ones and haven't used them yet.

Thank you everyone for your advice, it is really helpful to read it all. I think for peace of mind we will get mirrors, it definately sounds like it helps!!

Also, sorry, so many questions, could anyone recommend a good caravan insurance provider? Although our van isn't going to be worth a great deal, if we lost it we wouldn't be able to replace it!

Many thanks everyone, I've really been made to feel very welcome by you all :-)
