For some reasons the adverts are always louder, a lot louder.

I'm surprised you haven't sought Una Stubbs' advice, Derek. I'm sure she'd help with your hearing as well as with your painting.

As we get older our response to auditory frequencies changes and it could be that as an official old git, you are no longer hearing the lower and/or higher frequencies and it is this that makes TV sound seem muted to you.

An example of this is the device that some shopkeepers have used to deter youngsters from congregating outside their premises. The youngsters can't stand the high pitched whine and have to leave the area. Older people can't even hear it. See Here

This article from the Daily Mail Hearing test has a video that you can use to check your frequency response. It's best used with headphones but I've just done it without and could hear from around 25 - 6,600 Hz.

By the way, Specsavers now do hearing tests so it might be worth having your lugs checked out by an expert next time you're passing.

Bert feared his wife Peg wasn't hearing as well as she used to see and he thought she might need a hearing aid. Not quite sure how to approach her, he called the family Doctor to discuss the problem.

The Doctor told him there is a simple informal test the husband could perform to give the Doctor a better idea about her hearing loss.

'Here's what you do,' said the Doctor, 'stand about 40 feet away from her, and in a normal conversational speaking tone see if she hears you. If not, go to
30 feet, then 20 feet, and so on until you get a response.'

That evening, his wife was in the kitchen cooking dinner, and he was In the den. He says to himself, 'I'm about 40 feet away, let's see what happens.'
Then in a normal tone he asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?'

No response. So the husband moves closer to the kitchen, about 30 feet from his wife and repeats, 'Peg, what's for dinner?' Still no response.

Next he moves into the dining room where he is about 20 feet from his wife and asks, 'Honey, what's for dinner?' Again he gets no response.

So, he walks up to the kitchen door, about 10 feet away. 'Honey, what's for dinner?' Again there is no response.

So he walks right up behind her. 'Peg, what's for dinner?'

'For F*-#?? sake, Bert, for the FIFTH time, CHICKEN!

They have been "slating" Happy Valley today on Twitter for mumbling. I'm not a follower of it myself but it seems we have to live withit in this digital age!

It's a real shame as people who are suffering from hearing loss are missing out, I don't have the problem myself! and I'm glad I keep myself fit and active but often with eyes, ears etc there is little you can do to stop the onset!

This is a response one of several from my pal ex Beeb sound man well retired like me. It was in response to me forwarding him a letter to the Sunday Times.

Contacting the press is the best way to raise the issue. I think the Beeb's PR is poor now particularly where tech problems are concerned mainly because it is so fragmented and no one owns the problem any more. The old days of a tech info department have long since gone.
In a way both sound and lighting in their effort to approach realism have forgotten the old adage that if you can't see it or hear it then there is no point in making it. Ironically modern TVs have helped picture quality with HD and better contrast ratio's but have compromised sound with very small and concealed speakers because of flat screen technology, hence the advent of sound bars, sound plinths and seperate speakers .When I listened to Happy Valley with my headphones on I.Player is was better but by no means easily audible .The sound stage is too wide and the presentation of voices lacks direction.and perspective.

Gray I don't have a hearing problem and the Breakfast discussion this morning did not mention that.

Yes, I'd go along with that. Despite having a huge and expensive flat screen TV I still plug in a pair of headphones on occasions, especially during talk programmes etc, due to the terrible speech quality of the in-built speakers.

The range of human hearing is generally considered to be 20 Hz to 20 kHz, but it is far more sensitive to sounds between 1 kHz and 4 kHz. For example, listeners can detect sounds as low as 0 dB SPL at 3 kHz, but require 40 dB SPL at 100 hertz (an amplitude increase of 100).

I keep promising myself that one day I'm going to investigate the actual frequency range output of my speakers - it must be in the handbook somewhere.

Edit: for anyone also requiring or thinking about a set of earphones for TV listening I can certainly recommend these - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-HD-65...+Volume+Control - especially designed for enhancing speech quality (so not intended for HiFi listening) with individual volume controls for each ear.

I complained to the Beeb (first time ever) about Happy Valley's mumbling and got this as a reply.

"Happy Valley’s producer, Juliet Charlesworth appeared on ‘BBC Breakfast’ on 18 February to explain the situation. She confirmed that the programme passed the BBC's normal technical audio reviews and talked about the detailed checks and balances undertaken at the numerous stages of recording and editing the programme. She also said that a final dialogue check was carried out and was tested on different set-ups (including a domestic television) to ensure that it was audible and met the required broadcast standards.

Following the feedback we’re received from you and other viewers about episodes 1 and 2, the independent production company who make the programme for us, has decided to further investigate the sound for the remaining episodes to ensure it doesn't interfere with your enjoyment for the rest of the series."
