I don't think anyone can say that they don't have a problem with their hearing until they have had it tested by a competent assessor.
Most people will start gradually to lose sensitivity to certain frequencies from as early as eight or nine years of age and, depending on occupational exposure to loud noise, this will continue throughout their lives.
Anyone who is experiencing problems with their hearing should first get it tested rather than blaming broadcasters for poor sound quality. If the test confirms that your hearing is 100% (unlikely), then questions about broadcast sound quality are legitimate.
Gus Morris commented about the poor sound quality from the tiny, rear-facing speakers in modern flat screen TVs and I think he is spot-on. We bought a Yamaha soundbar with built-in sub-woofers and a 'clear speech' filter (£99 from Richer Sounds) as we were having difficulty following some dialogue, particularly when drowned out by background music. As the improvement in sound quality with the soundbar is very noticeable, it was well worth the outlay.

Does a wife fall into that category? Mine is often heard to say to me ( by others ) "did you hear what I said?", "are you bl**dy deaf or something?"

I had mine tested not long ago Brian and was given free aids. I have since returned them. They said my hearing was par for my age and not bad. I can tune in normal conversation, except when in a croded area. What's one of those? Oh yes could be a busy pub.
Thank you.

Phew, not going to be barred from the forum.
Lulu's nephew was the sound engineer on The Night Manager.
He also did Downton, Life on Mars and a number of others. But not, I am pleased to say Sherlock which I found terrible sound wise or indeed Happy Valley.

The recently finished, brilliantly produced 3 part drama One Child was enjoyed to the word by me and wasn't it scary?
A new one last night "Murder" was ditched by C and I although we could hear the dialogue clearly but couldn't get into it, very strange - maybe too modern Tristramish production.

on my cheap telly that's not classed as 'smart wifi' it has 'audio description'
we use it all the time
was rather funny when the person was describing a scene of a actor tied to table with a swinging blade, above
james bond secured to table about to loose his favourite gadgets hehehe

Didn't see it Roger thanks, but did read the Fellows thing. How the "whats it" can the government do anything about it? It's the actors not being able to project, production companies rubbish recording.
We recently enjoyed Reece Shearsmith in the lead of the play The Dresser at Chichester theatre and could hear every word.
