Of course you can only do the course if you haven't attended a course in the last 3 years!

I was caught by the Dorset cameras returning from AL after leaving the Eriba there for service. I did the course in Hertfordshire.
Still don't believe the mantra that 'speed kills' though. Its too easy to just keep repeating it.
It's bad driving that kills.
Although too much speed catches out poor drivers!

"Speed" itself does not kill BUT idiotic drivers do ! You've only got to witness the standard driving in the UK to realise this :( BUT the police are so inadequate that these idiots never get caught ! Anything other than sitting on the side of the road with Speed Camera seems beyond them ! More Police in plain cars is what is needed - pull the real 'dangers' on the road - those using 'phones, not using direction indicators, wrong lane on roundabouts, tailgating, ignoring 'solid no overtaking lines', driving with total disregard to other roads users etc to name a few !

Driving a few MPH over the limit is not in itself a danger - but it is an easy way to make a lot of money! Strangely in the USA almost all drivers observe the speed limits even on freeways (50mph) Slightly different on the Inter State Highway with a higher limit, where they tend to act like animals let out of a cage and go mad !, but there are so many Police about that there's a good chance of being 'done', Stopped, tasered, or if really naughty Shot !

I'd rather drive in the US than drive a mile on the M25 !

You ought to try using I-285 round Atlanta. It makes the M25 look like a gentle potter down the A23 for a day at the seaside in 1963.

I would humbly contend that the overall standard of driving in the US is considerably worse than it is here, not least because the driving tests are so absurdly easy. The only way you're likely to fail is if you crash into the test center (sic).

All things considered I'd rather drive in the US too, but only because there is far less traffic and therefore statistically less chance of someone out of his head on skunk driving a terminally rusty 1970s Chevrolet Impala with four bald tyres wiping you out.

This is the current state of speed limits in the US.

The Q&A's in the sidebar make interesting reading, especially the bit about speed and speed differentials.

I'm not coming at this from the high horse of piety and virtue - as far as speeding convictions are concerned, I've been there and done that, though not for a long time.

Having to stand before the beak in an ill-fitting suit and ask nicely not to be banned isn't much fun.

Derek, you can do the course anywhere you like but it has to be within 3 months, I think, of the date of the offence.

BTW my daughter has just renewed her insurance and was asked whether any named drivers have points on their licence or had attended a speed awareness course!

My daughter did the course at Winfrith, Dorset and said it was horrendous. The staff were patronising, unpleasant and constantly looking for negative body language from the participants. She came away with a heightened dislike for the police for whom she'd only previously had admiration.

By contrast, one of my shooting buddies did the Hampshire course and although like me he's a cynical bugger through and through, only had positive things to report. He even got away with a comment that his eyes would be better spent focused on the road ahead rather than on his speedo.

Hampshire it has to be.

I had a similar experience 9 years ago, the instructor was very condescending and treated everyone like they had just robbed a bank. I did pick up a few good tips though. The only advIse I can give Derek is just bite your lip while you are there and take it on the chin. Back then you had to go to the force where you got caught speeding, so for me I had to travel from Manchester to Flint in Wales. They even had a speed camera near the office which got two of the students who were attending. A relative had to attend Perranporth Devon from Manchester for one of those naughty boy driving schools...

I was caught in Dorset on the way back from AL having dropped off the van for service. Did the course in Hertfordshire which was well presented without prejudice or moralising.
Mrs P has also just done one which she thought was good!

To be honest I want more people fined, banned retested. It never fails to amaze me that in an "average speed controlled area" rodworks etc, I can almost guarantee I'll be the one doing just under the "limit" while others go speeding by! And that includes lorries!

It's jot just speed, it's tailgating (bullying I call it) mobile phone use, not signalling in fact anything that involves increasing the already inherant dangers that driving brings.

If you have ever had to pick up or shovel body parts into a black bag! Then maybe you'd have differing attitudes. Unfortunately I have, and on more occasions than I care to remember, it's a sight, sound and smell that stays with you!

I totally agree with the lack of Police and I wouldbike more, many more! But technology can and should also play it's part, you'll notice on motorways lts of camera's on bridges etc, some of these are linked direct to DVLA for ANPR enforcement, why can't they help with speeding, tailgating, mobile phone use etc.

Just some of my thoughts I could rant forever on bad or dangerous driving, but I'll just remember that when I was being taught to drive my instructor told me to treat everyone else on the road as an IDIOT and potential hazard.

No smilies in this post!

Just got the stuff yesterday and it will be within 8 weeks and they say it WILL be in Dorset, so how did you get out of that one Tony. I aim to call them on Monday and ask.
