Hi, my Triton has some bad rust in the box section at the front of the van by the gas store. Part of the box section has rusted away completely. Is this a difficult repair? Can it be done without removing the alloy skin? How much do you think it will cost? Kind regards D

There are a few threads on rust with the subframe, it is doubtful it can be repaired without peeling the aluminum away.

Eriba Triton needing a lot of welding

Dreaded rust!

Sounds like the same problem I had. If so it involves taking the front window out and peeling back the aluminium. It was the most difficult bit we had to do.

But do-able.

We're taking stock of our recetly purchases Familia and reckon we'll be replacing several lengths of the box sections in the front frame at some stage - perhaps next winter... it's not too bad but it definitely needs attention and a sItitch in time and all that. After a good examination the other day I can say that taking the windows, removing the extruded trim strips and peeling back the aluminium skin is absolutely the way to go. As well as replacing the floor (it's not horrid but it's very tired...) we're going to take the opportunity to replace the front window rubbers, the door seals and the decorative Herzig strips in the extrusions as well as pressing out the little dents from the area.

Steve and Angie.

hi everyone and thanks for responding. After closer inspection the rust is apparent around both sides of the box section from the front to the wheel arch. Its not totally rotted but has some holes. does any one have a sectional drawing of the sub frame/chassis/floor so that i can better understand the mechanical arrangement?

thanks D

If you want to trace the subframe behind the aluminium skin use a magnet

Steve.
