AL Porch Awning - a few questions

After a somewhat disastrous foray into the world of Kampa awnings I am considering alternatives.
One option is the standard AL Porch awning on our 2017 410
Having scoured the interweb for photos and indeed the extensive gallery here plus hobs incredibly useful section I do have a couple of questions.

On a Triton 4xx does the left side leg stop you opening the access hatch or the rear side window?

Can you still open the main door to at least 90 degrees?

Is it still possible to fit a table to the side strip?

Is there enough room for 2 adults to sit plus table and not trip over each other/commit various forms of murder/sue for divorce?

All we want to be able to do is a bit of cooking (if on ehu) with the side doors open and power from access hatch, plus get some shade and have somewhere to store the King khazi during the day. Oh and hang stuff to dry if needed....

I wonder if the porch awning has basically the same frame as the full awning. If so then the main difference will only be the amount of fabric. Why not have the full version and use a Fiamma Caravanstore for short stops?

Hi have you checked out the vango drive away air awnings we have the kela drive away and find it easy to put up and storage area in drive away section for the loo as it worked brillantly for us with our 410 no sharing your seating area with the loo .if you check out the picture section there are some set up

Only used mine 2 or 3 times and not in the last year or so but if i remember correctly it does get in the way of the locker door and window.
Like Frantone suggests I use sunshades most of the time caravastore etc mainly because I travel alone so they are easier for one person to put up than any sort of awning, and for short trips you can spend a lot of time putting up and packing away an awning.

And also being a lone traveller need less room anyway.

This topic is about setting mine up for the first time.

AL Porch Awning

Bear in mind no awning or sunshade for that matter is perfect and I sometimes think we expect too much from them, most sunshades are not good when its windy (100 years ago that much canvas would pull a small sail boat along)

Yes, looking at your thread and this photo https://files.homepagemodules.de/b614104/...n2_XzqhYIWH.jpg it looks as though you've had to shuffle it down the van a bit to clear the fridge vents and awning light. That's not so much of an issue on the 410 as the fridge is t'other side and light horizontal near door.

The pull out awning on or MH was little more than an excuse to try and get airborne in the slightest breeze - I must admit I have little faith in them.

We tend to be on site for 3 or 4 days minimum so the effort may be worth it.

I do most of my cooking outside under a sunshade, no loo in a 410 ......... I hadn't noticed that before.

We only have an AL porch awning and an Isabella sun shade just like Nev, we probably use the porch awning 90% of the time even on long stays up to nearly three weeks. We have never experienced any pooling and no problems in high winds.

We have a Familia so it may be slightly different than your situation however I would assume it will almost be the same. We cannot open the side locker with the awning up and as the rear leg fouls the door. Consideration has to be made to make sure you have everything out before you erect it, otherwise you will have to pull up your rear seat. The front door can be opened at 90 degrees. The table still fits the outside rail but it is a bit cramped, one usually sits at the end and the other on the side near the door. We have a small extension lead from the socket at the side of the fridge in the van to inside the awning which allows us to use electrical items so no issues if you want to eat in the awning. I would assume your thunder box would have to fit under the table in the awning when not in use.

The porch awning is a compromise of a full awning, it wont be as roomy but it will do the job with the advantage of a very easy set up and compact. If you look carefully at the picture you can see that the table fits ok with the two chairs.

A full awning can do everything that a porch can and more, however a porch awning may often be too small.

We have used a porch awning for some time but after managing for long enough to squish chairs, dogs, table, two of us, as well as other bits and pieces, we have decided we'll probably leave the big table and chairs at home and in future use it just as, guess what, a porch! i.e. for shorter stays in colder, wetter weather to keep the rain off the door, to leave wet boots and coats in, (possibly to cook in). We now have a full awning and will just have to get better at setting it up!

A balance between size, easy erection and staying up happily for a long time are important. It may not be the perfect solution but if it works then it's the right solution. I'd love a bigger one but it just may not be practical in a year or two.

Hi,

I have this porch for my Triton 420. First up, it is a very well made porch and excellent value for money. It has withstood some fierce winds in the west of Scotland.

To your questions,

It will not foul the window and you can open your door 90 degrees. I do not have an access hatch so cannot comment. I do not think you can use your table on the exterior fitting but as I do not carry an Eriba table it has never cropped up. You can just sit two people at a table opposite one another but would be able to sit side by side assuming your table is long enough. Hanging up, drying, etc. Is no problem.

I also have the full awning but only use it for two weeks+ stops. I have never experienced "pooling" with either awning and living in the west of Scotland gives them the sternest of tests.

Our second-hand Triton came with two awnings, an NL porch with alloy poles and a Soplair Bourgogne with fibreglass poles.

We found that they weighed more or less the same and took about as long as each other to erect so we sold the porch and retained the full awning which has proved to be far more versatile.
