Flickering LED lights
Flickering LED lights

I recently fitted a pair of slim profile LED lights in our Puck L to replace the stainless steel 'spot lights' as they just get in the way. As we don't have a battery I have only just been able to try them out. We're on our first trip away this year and we're on a nice CL in Cambridgeshire that provides hookup. Frustratingly the new lights flicker - strangely it's even worse when you are not looking directly at them! Has any one any ideas as to the problem? I purchased the lights from a caravan dealer assesesory shop and they assured me I just had to wire them in as per instructions - live to live neutral to neutral. I've experimented by reversing the polarity but it makes no difference Any advice gratefully received. Tony

Tony, firstly the good news in that the led you have are not polarity sensitive. If they were you would have blown them by swapping the leads over.
Your problem could be down to one of several issues, but you do NOT have faulty lights, but possibly cheaper quality ones..
Others more technical will smooth out my comments but basically the led draw very little from your power pack/transformer and it is operating below the level for which it was intended. You can fool it by switching on one other normal/halogen lights and all will probably be fine. Other option is to fit a small battery in-line and this will also do the job. It is for this reason that I put a Yuasa NP7-12L battery in my last van. https://www.thesafetycentre.co.uk/store/...CFUeVGwod3O0A0A I had removed the large battery as I did not want the weight.

If you don't have a battery your BIP unit may will be the older version that outputs 12V AC for the lights and 12V DC for the water pump.
You could try moving the lighting connections (in the BIP) to the pump outputs to see if this stops the flickering.
I wouldn't advise doing this if the light units were loaded with the normally fitted halogen bulbs as there would be too much current drawn from the rectifier (the component that converts AC to DC for the pumps) and it could be damaged. But with LEDs the current draw would be quite small.

Leds need to be Ac \ Dc rated as the eriba ........... at least my import without a battery made Leds that were just Dc flicker badly.
As John said I think the mains transformer has a tendency to produce 12 volt Ac for some reason.

Thank you everyone for your comments and advice. I suppose I should have added that all the other LED s I have fitted to replace the original halogen bulbs work just fine but these recent additions are complete units rather than bulb substitutes and maybe arn't compatible with our vans transformer. I'll take them back and get a box of candles!

That's interesting about putting a battery in the circuit but I'm not sure that will work.
All my lights are now fitted with LEDs, cheap box of 10 from fleabay. A couple of them flicker when on electric hook up even though I have a leisure battery. They don't flicker when I'm off grid (which is most of the time)
