Mark are you talking about a special refillable bottle, or a standard Calor propane 6k?
Dave

If it is a standard Calor cylinder then it should not be refilled at an LPG pump.

Calor say:

This practice is not only unlawful but also highly dangerous as there is a strong probability of leaks occurring and cylinders being overfilled.

But of course Calor want you to pay £22.00 to refill by them.

That may be so but nevertheless the Calor cylinders are not designed to be refilled at a petrol station - that's why proper refillable cylinders are available.

If anyone does not like Calor prices then don't buy their products.... Join into the fun of this thread and look into the legal safe refillable alternatives

Cheers,
Steve.

Quite happy to let the thread continue on the subject of refillable bottles, but just want to clarify:-

Yes, my propane bottles are 'normal' ones.
I don't fill them myself at a petrol station selling LPG. They are filled by a specialst garage who do LPG conversions to cars, so the bottles are filled using specialist equipment and are not at risk of being overfilled.
The process might be 'unlawful' in the eyes of Calor, but I'll take my chances. Kodi software is illegal as far as I know, and VPN software is probably frowned on as well. The list is endless........

Cheers Mark

As we spend an average of 6 months a year in the van and only use 1 X 6k, I don't think it would be worth spending a lot of money on refillables, however, what I do object to is Calor using their dominance of the market to charge 3X the price that a small independent can supply it for in a safe manner, as for don't use their products, there seems to be very little other choice as they have a national hold on the market, and refuse to supply any dealer who dares stock any other brand, thus strangling any start up suppliers

Thank you for clarifying Mark, and apologies if I have come over all self rightious! You are of course at liberty to do as you wish Many others who refill 'standard' cylinders are not so careful and, I'm sure you will agree, do run a a very real risk - especially regarding overfilling.
FWIW I too do not particularly like (or condone...!) Calor's pricing strategy but moaning about it was not supposed to be the purpose of this thread.
The reason behind the original question was to find out more about the legal refillable cylinders that are now freely available and to learn from the experiences of any other forum members here who have used them. It would be great to discover more about the subject from real users outside of the manufacturer's and distributor's blurb.

I hope you understand and I wish you well,
Steve.

Morning Steve,

No offence taken, that only happens on the other forum!
Just for my tuppence worth, I don't really know much about the refillable bottles, but I guess you need special bottles, some form of conversion on your van, and then have to take the van to an LPG filling station.
We all probably consume varying amounts of gas, but I'd have thought that a 6kg calor bottle would give a fair amount of use off grid. We carry a small bottle as well so technically never run out.
I'm rambling a bit now, as we're just sitting in Rome airport waiting for our flight back!!

Cheers Mark
