Refillable Gas Bottles - Anyone Using Them??

We're wondering if any of you folk have experience of using these refillable gas cylinders that are available nowadays? The idea of just having the one type of cylinder which could be used in the UK and abroad seems like a good one to us and the gas from an LPG pump at a petrol station is much cheaper than the gas in a "normal" cylinder. The initial cost of the refillable is higher than the usual cylinder deposit (getting on for 2-3 times) but, other than this, they look like a better deal and more convenient. We were thinking of a 6kg or maybe a 10 kg for our Famillia...
What do you reckon???

Cheers,
Angie and Steve.

Thanks for this - interesting reading but talks about the ones that are permanently 'plumbed in' to the caravan and I agree that this arrangement is best suited to motorhomes.

I believe there are bottles out there which can be taken to the filling station on their own.... these are the type that we are thinking about. Anyone used them??

Cheers,
Steve.

I don't know if I'm missing something here, but I take my 6kg propane gas bottle to a garage that sells LPG and they fill it for about seven quid.

Ha! I've got the gaslow twin cylinder system fitted and I LOVE it! The refueling nozzle has been drilled into the nearside of the 'A' frame cover and so it is all completely legal to pull-in and reguel at a service station. It is an absolute doddle to fill the car with petrol and then pull forward to the gas pump and fill/top-up the gas cylinders with gas. It cost me a few quid and I don't use a lot of gas but the convenience, oh my!

We have the Safefill 7.5 bottle which has been very good, filling it in the UK is no problem but the French do not like them.

I read somewhere that there's a piece of paper the manufacturers will give you to say that the bottles are OK to fill at the pump.... Is this true? Even if it is perhaps the idea that you can go 'anywhere' with these bottles is not actually doable in practice

Cheers,
Steve.

From what I have read (and there is a super extensive amount of information on the subject on the discussion forum of the CC website), it is not legal to bimble up to the lpg pump at the local service station with gas bottle in hand and to fill with gas. The bottles must be installed in a vehicle (caravan classed as vehicle) and have a securely fitted filling nozzle into which the gas pump is securely inserted.

I'm not sure that is entirely true although there does seem to be vague and conflicting information out there.... Doing a bit more research at the moment but apparently Safefill make a stand alone cylinder which is perfectly OK to take to the filling station for filling. Bernardm (post#6) for example is having no problems refilling his!

Refilling conventional cylinders is of course not allowed, no matter how carefully you 'bimble'

Steve.

Just to add a note about the Safefill gas bottles , they are snug fit in the gas locker of our 430 so would advice to try it in your locker before buying.

I'm curious are there many places (garages) that sell this gas? in my rural location I can't remember ever seeing a garage that sold the stuff, mind you I don't exactly go round looking for it!

I go to a small garage near where I work, albeit in a suburban location, that coverts cars to run on LPG. They have a large propane tank, and I give them my 6kg bottle which they then fill using an adaptor, It costs about £6-7 for the refill.

Cheers Mark

Over 1400 outlets in the U, most of which are fuel stations.

Mark are you talking about a special refillable bottle, or a standard Calor propane 6k?
