Spare wheel carrier

I've had to remove the spare wheel carrier on my 2014 Triton 420 because it grounded on the entry to my sloping drive. Is there a carrier available that will fit to the front or rear of my van?

Since starting eriba ownership in 2003 I am not any alternative for the rear and have never seen anything for the front other than home made brackets on the drawbar.
Unless you can move the existing carrier forward significantly you are going to need to carry the wheel in the car or van. I would say the car is preferable as less likely to move around.
IKEA do a bag that the wheel will fit in a treat. I used one of these for the spare car wheel on my VW Touran some years ago. http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/small...t-art-10056770/

Oops - forgot about the one you can hang on the back, probably inadvertently discounted it as it stops you putting a bike on the back, which from my signature photo you will see I do.

Depends on the rear of your van. This carrier was available but you require the "towel rail" handle to fit on to.

It'd be interesting to know if Sandy Jandi is any more kindly disposed to rear-mounted spare wheels than he is to rear-mounted bike racks.

He seemed reluctant to fit a bike carrier because of its potential to increase the dumb-bell effect and upset stability, and a spare wheel must be somewhere close to 20 kilos, never mind the thing it goes inside.

Would a pair of bikes and a rack weigh more than that, and does the fact that the rack pushes the weight out another foot and a half make the difference?

Seeing that poor old Triton writhing around like a mad spaniel trying to slip its lead kind of makes you wonder.

Before you throw your spare cage away did you do the usual of dropping the jockey wheel as low as you could so that the back is higher?
My Familia will bottom out on the camber of the road with the spare tire cage when I get on my slopping drive if I don't alter my jockey wheel..

Hello Poptop

Haven't thrown the carrier away yet. Finding it quite useful as a trip hazard in the garage. I have lowered the jockey wheel as much as possible to increase ground clearance. I'm used to doing this as I've been parking a car trailer for my Caterham Seven on the drive for some years.

Thank you everyone for your swift responses. I do have the towel rail handle at the back. Does anyone have any more info on the spare wheel holder that attaches to it?

Towel rail. See Eribanut's post above. This is what we're talking about Alan. This one is Eriba4us's van and I know Bigmandiddyvan and Chezmart have one too.

I've seen some exploded views somewhere. I'll have a look around.

An alternative depending on whether
your towing car has a tin of spray for puncture repair rather than a spare wheel, your caravan tyre may fit in cars wheel well in boot.

another idea is what has happened to this eriba

Hello Alan and Welcome to Eriba Folk.

I would share the concerns of the others regarding mounting the weight of a spare wheel at the very back of the caravan - the effect on stability will be real, it is probably the worst place to have extra mass and a spare wheel is a big lump!

On a slightly different tack, if you find that you really have no need for your spare wheel carrier then we would be very interested to have it and see if it will fit on our Familia. Please let us know when have had enough of falling over it in you garage.

Best wishes,
Angie and Steve.

PS Caterham Seven...??? Nice motor

Thanks again everyone for your help and suggestions.

Randa, thanks for the pictures and information.

Pop540, my tow car is a Landrover Defender 90 and my two Labradors take up all the space in the back.

Angie and Steve, I'm also concerned about the effect on stability so will make enquiries about this. I will keep you in mind if I decide not to refit the trip hazard. The 7 is a great car, I had the R400 for about 12 years.

Eribanaut, that's the same as the carrier I've just taken off. I am looking for an alternative to carrying the spare under the van.

Think I might have to resort to a roofrack for the spare but slightly concerned about height restricted car parks etc when not towing.

if its only the drive way causing issue, we sometimes throw a couple of pieces of wood under caravan wheels to raise the height between driveway and underneath.
It is a messing about going on lining up moving pieces , but might be safer for your back, than lugging a spare up on a roof rack.

don't defenders have spare wheels on bonnet? as well as bulk head and rear door, if covered no one would know not landy.
hope find a solution that works for you.
