"On the way to their holiday address, the driver lost control of the wheel after a few kilometers on the A59 when he realised he was going in the wrong direction on the wrong side of the road. He lost control of the wheel because the big nut in the middle dropped on the floor and rolled under his seat and the wheel came off in his hands."

Can't get it to do it in firefox ..............

I see the van is still on the hitch as the rear of the car is in the air.

This happens quite often, says something for the "tow hitch design" which looks flimsy when you consider the forces that must be generated

I wonder which is safer? That the unit stays together or that the van unhitches? Also I wonder if fitting the lock onto the hitch while travelling has any influence on whether the car and van stay together or not?

I never travel with a lock on, if it somehow jams there is an instant accident ........... ... if I stop somewhere on the route it is ho hardship to get it out of the car and fit it.

I don't recall ever seeing anything official that says they can be used in transit?

I am sometimes amazed that they stay stay together under all that stress when we are told that the noseweight limit of a hitch is about 75 Kg.

And what has it got...

2 bikes hanging off the rear end.

I was at JandI recently and Sandy said it didn't matter what I wanted to pay him he wouldn't fit a rear mounted cycle rack to my Eriba because of the risk of 'van instability...

So I had him fit the new Thule a front (A frame) mounted cycle rack instead.

I passed it on the hard shoulder a little later and posted in the 'spotted' thread.
Thank goodness it all stayed upright.

My neighbor has just returned with his caravan (a WWB Not an Eriba !) having suffered a caravan tyre 'blow out' at motorway speed :( Fortunately no damage to tow car, caravan or persons :)

The damage could have been a lot worse had it not been for efficiency of the Ford Mondeo's Stability control system and the fact that the van wheels are fitted with "Tyron Bands"

No apparent cause for the blow out BUT the Tyre date was 2011 so it pays to check tyre manufacture dates, just incase DSCF3080.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)DSCF3081.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I see no reason why you could not fit them if you had the correct size rim and found something with a suitable load rating.. This would mean something in the region of R16 or R17 wheel as the run flat are a low profile tyre.
The ride would however be very harsh and even more cupboard doors than usual would work loose.

The trouble with run flat tyres is they assume that some air is in the tyre, I've had 2 deflations on run flats both were total ie no readable pressure on a digital tpg, this causes the side seal of the run flat tyre to come away from the rim, meaning you cannot reinflate, it needs a tyre fitter, for me no problem as both times it happened at home, and fitters is about 300m away BMW dealer. Also despite what they say about 30 mph and up to 50 miles, you carry on if you can afford to replace your alloy, mine are over £500 each. Just the benefit of my ill luck, take it or leave it, I'm only stating exactly what happened to me

This is another hazard which fortunately isn't much on the Eribas radar, this bridge is on the same road to the caravan club site Rowntree in York. It wasn't a good day for this campervan..

I've got a copy of the same picture with the number plate not scribbled on.

Should I post it?
