Standard and extra fittings

Have just been looking at the Hymer online list of standard fittings and just wondered what this is: 'Spacious dresser with laundry hamper with height-adjustable bottom' - I wasn't aware that we had one!

And has anyone got one of these? Seems a bit expensive for a bin in the floor but is it really useful?? Underfloor storage.jpg - Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I'm reliably informed if you can store an extra pair of shoes in it, then it's a very good idea. And who am I to argue.

Just found the answer to my first question:
Großzügiger Kleiderschrank mit Wäschefach (Fachboden in der Höhe verstellbar) - Spacious wardrobe with laundry compartment (shelf adjustable in height)
(Though I'm not sure where the laundry compartment is)

And at 245 Euros (Approx £220 the underfloor shoebox seems a tad pricey) I'd still like to hear if anyone has one fitted.

I was going to order one for my new 540 but Cameron at AL talked me out of it - he said that it severely reduces the ground clearance under the van, especially if you also have the spare wheel carrier...

Thank you for that - not such a good idea then!

Ground clearance for the under box is not an issue as it is next to the axel, the spare wheel carrier more of an issue.
The box is good for tonic mixer etc & veg box, keeps quite cool..
Why would you want a spare wheel carrier/tyre?

"Why would you want a spare wheel carrier ?"

I'm not sure if your comment is tongue in cheek or not.
I have never needed to use my caravan spare but am happy to carry the extra weight for that occasion when it may be needed and I can continue and enjoy my holiday.

Its not Colin, I've got breakdown cover and carry tyre repair inflator.
I also have Tyron bands fitted, so can drive to nearest tyre repair garage.
It also hate how it looks, personal preference I guess.

I suppose my problem is I'm old school. The debate on spare wheel or can of gunk seems to run forever on forums. Each to there own.

New cars come with a can of gunk in the inflation kit. [ that should be replaced every 3 ? years]
In the event of a puncture you squirt this into the tyre via the valve and pump the tyre up. Hopefully it will inflate.
Only problem is it is limited in the type of puncture it can cope with. It is usually fine for a slow puncture, but for anything else it may be a matter of luck if it works.

I'm with you Colin. That spare wheel gives peace of mind. Tyre repair inflator (tin of gunk) is no good to man nor beast when the tyre is shredded/blown out. And, finally, I've just witten out a list of everything that's important to me, came to 54,326 lines, and luckily the look of the underside of my van was the very last item on my list. How's that for luck?!!!

I had an Audi A2 with no spare wheel that shredded a tyre on the M54. If you think I am going to change a wheel on the hard shoulder of a motorway!.......I called Audi assistance and a tow truck took me to Audi Wolverhampton. We debated this again when we brought our Landrover. Thus, it has no spare and we have 7 seats as an option instead, together with an electronic towball that we couldn't have had with a spare. If a tyre shreds we call LR assistance, who also say that they will deal with you whatever situation you are in (as did Audi), so if you are towing, they tow that too, including across europe. The chances of a caravan tyre shedding are surely more remote than a car. If you have breakdown assistance for car and caravan, whats the problem? Having said that, him indoors insisted on a spare for the caravan and bought a bottle jack to go with it!

I have just ordered a new car/tow vehicle to replace the Jaguar X type that I purchased a couple of years ago in a mid life crisis
The Jaguar although a lovely car to drive with lots of oomph solo did not tow so well as I expected. It always felt a little twitchy especially at speed although I tow at 60mph usually on suitable roads / motorways. It replaced my Hyundai Santa Fe which was a brilliant tow vehicle.
Looked at Land Rover Discovery Sport HSE but decided on Kia Sorento 2.2CRDI KX4 which is top of the range Sorento and has all the boys toys you could wish for
I was always concerned with the Jag that the spare was an emergency wheel not a full size spare which the Hyundai and Sorento pack. I would also not consider changing a wheel on the car these days in the event of a puncture, but would call up Green Flag to sort it out. This way I can have wheel changed and be be back in holiday mode asap and get the offending tyre sorted at my leisure

Wow! This has gone a long way from my original inquiry about whether or not the underfloor shoe box was a good idea as an optional extra! Now we're on to breakdown assistance. (Bit like Chinese whispers).
