That's quite a long way to take it! They do similar here in Suffolk - they continually (and I mean continually!) have to dredge sand from Felixstowe port entrance to allow the big container ships in and they then truck it north up the Suffolk coast and dump it on beaches - from where, through the process of longshore drift, it goes back south again to Felixstowe... they replenished Southwold beach with sand a few years ago and it has now almost all gone again.
Back in 1086, Dunwich, on the Suffolk coast, was one of the largest ten towns in Britain, with a thriving port. Now almost all gone through coastal erosion. As a child I used to play on cliffs there that are gone now. I remember seeing human bones sticking out of graves that were exposed by cliff falls.
