I feel frustration over the insurance market's tactics too but if you think about it, in a competitive market they have little choice.

Unless you're prepared to see your customers cherry picked by the competition, whilst you plough on with 'sensible' pricing, to eventually discover you have no customers left. So you have to join the discounting to bring in new customers to replace the 'churn and you hope that once you've hooked someone inertia will allow you time to reel in some profit from them in future years. All of this, of course, creates it's own 'churn.

For the consumer it creates opportunities to save substantial sums if you have the time and inclination to shop around every year. Those who are unwitting, or too busy pay the price and could be said to be being exploited but if everybody shopped around the insurance companies would have to change their model, or go bust.

In a way it's the same principle as supermarkets offering loss leaders to entice you in the store and hope you buy some big margin products once you're inside.

It doesn-t stop it being annoying though.

I am just in the process of renewing again and have done the ring around as I do each year to see what others will offer against my £265 renewal quote. [£25K van, £500 contents, new for old, £100x/s, continental cover etc]
So far I have not had to get into the "why" conversation as firms of good reputation are coming back far higher at between £380 and £510. I must be lucky.

Hitch lock and wheel clamps prices vary considerably. Do insurance companies insist on a minimum standard. I've looked at a few terms and conditions and they just say they must be attached if not towing. I'm not really bothered about how secure they are myself, just want to tick the boxes.

I do not recall being asked by insurance companies which hitch lock and wheel clamp I use, but I have always offered the information.

And also would they ask for proof they were fitted.

Go Compare quoted me £120 for £9000 for the Puck, £100 excess, £500 awning, £500 accessories, £500 personal possessions. with Frank Pickles

Slightly off topic, as you know we had an accident in Italy 20 months ago, well the Italian insures have finally admitted liability and paid Saga, who have repaid our excess just in time for us to renew our car insurance with the accident as a no blame. the down side being our premium has gone from £465 last year for the Citroen to £1200 this year for the Kodiaq, and they wont budge.

Dave,
you could go onto the briskoda forum and contact Adrian Flux insurance. They tend to be sensible people.

I think some insurance companies are starting to change. Our car renewal just came through and it’s just a £10 increase on last year. Can’t complain and it avoids the hours of trawling through websites and calls to swap.

And that £10 might even be down to the increase in tax brought in over the last year.

At least one insurance company is still at it.

My home insurance renewal was £411, up from £367. I got a quote of £232 from LV for the same cover. A saving of £179 on the renewal figure.

Don't forget, if your not using your car for commuting you can get a reduced premium.
