What to buy!

I am looking at the items I need to get to collect my Eriba and have made the list below. Are there any of these I don't need to get before using the Eriba:
Hitchlock
Wheelclamp
Leveller ramps
Spirit level
Towing mirrors
Nose weight measure

Never thought there was so much to get!
On top of the tow bar and insurance it is all adding up but I keep thinking it will be worth it!

One other thing I forgot about is when parked up at home it will be on a slight incline. Should I use the levellers to ensure rain runs off as it should do rather than tilted more to one side if left without levellers. I would have thought it best to keep as level as possible to ensure frames are not stressed by angles over a prolonged period.

Sorry so many questions but this is all new to me and a big learning curve.

You'll need to carry some sort of jack with you when you do your journey to collect the Eriba, unless you're a member of a breakdown service.

It's getting so exciting planned my first stay in norfolk as it would be to long a drive in one day.

Wouldn't worry too much about it being level when at home, let the water run off as easily as possible. The only time levelling may be important is when running the fridge on gas.

I don't think I'd bother with a dedicated noseweight gauge.

A set of cheap (£5) bathroom scales from Boots or Argos and a couple of bits of wood will do the job:

Get the van more or less level and put the scales directly under the hitch. Measure the distance from the underside of the hitch to the top of the scales. Cut a length of scrap timber (broom handle or thick dowel or something like that) to suit, and screw a ply or MDF plate to each end so that you end up with a wooden dumbbell something like the one in the photo.

Wind the hitch up a bit with the jockey and stand your wooden thing on the scales under the hitch. Wind the jockey down until the scales are taking all the weight, read the scales and Robert's your mother's brother.

Provided you pack the van the same way for each trip, you won't need to weigh it every time or take the scales with you.

And I wouldn't bother with a spirit level either. You'll be able to get pretty close by eye, and if you aren't happy with that, put a little ball on the floor and see which way it rolls or use a glass of water.

I never use a spirit level, I have 2 x plastic Fiamma levelling ramps that are stored under my gas bottle as I never use them, noseweight? I know what it feels like by weight, and we always load the same way

Lots of things we "think" we need are a waste of money, we don't even carry a water roll or waste water container, we use plastic bottles and always use the onsite facilities

Not everybody has all your years of experience.

We all have to start somewhere.

The rain runs off anyway so level is fine on the drive.

Thanks for all the replies as always very helpful and appreciated. Although I am all for saving money I think a few things I know I will use. One holiday planned is on a hilly field so ramps will be needed and I think the mileco system looks very good. Agree with Agger on using facilities on site and thanks for the advice on saving pennies. Just come in from a day of hard work clearing plants and rejigging garden to make parking space for the Eriba, not long now the builder has to come and widen my entrance and gates.

I agree with Agger I have just one levelling ramp never used still in its new packaging I just move the van if it's not level enough. Ony carry two plastic bottles for water and a plastic bucket under van for waist water. And just incase a cheap spirit level from a pound shop, you just turn it round to check if it is working ok., I used a crook wheel lock and the hitch lock , is part of the towing hitch, to be covered for insurance and the wing mirrors a required by law.

Have a look through the gallery, many photo's are taken on site (some are not) I found a few leveller ramps being used but some were apparently just being used to "chock" the wheels and not used for levelling.

As I said many times, we travel light, this is'nt for everyone! But we have other priorities, best of luck with your decision making, it is'nt easy

Edit = plenty of spirit level apps free on google play

Hiya... When and where are you getting your Eriba from. Also which model. Remember reading a message about it, but can't find it anymore.
We now have Colin back from repair shop, so from next week end, summer begins. Hope yours begins soon for you.

Hi shrublands, getting it from Dom fox up in your area. It's a 420gt 2008 went up there on holidays in a cottage in February and called to have a chat and see different models and he was very helpful . Original idea was to go to source used in holland but Dom's price was reasonable and ready to go so a few weeks after chatting with him he had the exact spec I was after and although earlier than planned seized the opportunity. I was hoping to have changed my car first but as I am having a tow bar fitted the that will have to wait until next year. First stop over will be up in norfolk near to him as I don't fancy over 8 hours driving back so will collect and have an overnight stay and set off next day to home. Good to hear yours is back ready to go on travels although can understand your apprehension.
