Ouch! Service costs
Ouch
Just booked our first year service with AL. Having owned a white box for the last 7 years I was surprised by the year 1 service costs. Service £258 and water ingress report is £90. A total of £348 for a service seems excessive. Is this standard?

Motters has a deal on servicing. He'll be along shortly I'm sure.
It's difficult with a new van and the need to keep on side with the warranty.
I used to use a mobile guy on my 540's and I've used another recently on the Bailey. He charged £160 all in. He was a member of the Approved Workshop Scheme and that kept the Bailey warranty intact. Where you stand on the Eriba warranty and the AWS I'm not sure.

I think I'm right in saying that you can have the annual service done by any AWS vetted tech, which includes most dealers and some mobile guys, and that complies with the warranty. However Hymer tag on a damp check, for which they supply stamps and they only supply them to Hymer dealerships. The stamps are a qualifier for the damp part of the warranty. So you have to go to a Hymer dealership if you want to keep that bit of the warranty operational.
Sorry DM I don't think you have warranty conditions to worry about on your Pan.

When you buy new Hymer over you over a barrel as regards servicing and the warranty. I asked Hymer and got the reply below.
Email to Hymer:
Hi Hymer, please can you advise, I live in the UK and I have a 2015 Eriba Familia, do I have to use an official Hymer dealer for all the servicing to keep the mechanical/damp warranty valid or can I use any Caravan engineer/company? Thanks
Hymer reply
We refer to your request dated 18.11.2016.
You definitely have to go to an authorized Hymer/Eriba dealer for your warranty inspections.
We hope we were able to help you.

Thanks for the information. So I suppose the question is does anyone know of a Hymer dealer/service centre nearer South Wales than AL?
There is not one. I think you will also find that Lowdhams of Nottingham and AL of Poole are both about 4 hrs away from you.
Lowdhams have a camping area for owners taking vans in for a service. This has electric hook-ups and I believe is available foc for an overnight stay.
Lowdhams get booked up several months in advance as do AL.

When you buy new Hymer over you over a barrel as regards servicing and the warranty.
The Block Exemption which prevents car manufacturers doing exactly what Hymer are doing doesn't apply to caravans.
With a new car you can have it serviced anywhere you like provided it's done by a VAT registered garage, covers the same items and uses approved or OEM-quality parts without affecting the warranty.
I reckon there's a pretty strong argument for saying that it should apply to caravans as well, but then the caravan market is minuscule compared to the automotive one so there's infinitely less lobbying power to encourage any kind of change in the law.
It's a tidy little earner for the Hymer dealers, that's for sure.
I still find it extraordinary that it costs more to get a caravan - a tin tent on wheels fastened together with a handful of self-tappers - serviced at an 'authorised' dealer than it costs to get your average car serviced at a franchise despite the caravan having 99% fewer moving parts.

Try this Hymer dealer locator, as a matter of interest when I had my first Eriba serviced at Lowdhams in Huddersfield they did not sell Eribas.. However as they were an official Hymer dealer they could be used to keep the warranty valid.

There is one Hymer dealer who are likely to be nearer to South Wales than AL or Lowdhams and that's Highbridge.
They sell Eriba/Hymer WWB's and Hymer motorhomes and one gets the impression they only really want the franchise for the motorhome business but they are accredited Hymer/Eriba agents and one of the biggest dealerships in the country. They also get excellent customer service reviews on CT, which is relatively unusual for any caravan dealer.
Certainly worth a phone call to save 4 hours of a round trip.

Does it actually say in any of the pre sales literature or the manual that you have to have a Hymer authorised service for the warranty? We had our damp test done at AL last year before or after (cant recall) the spring meet but they couldn't fit the service in (we enquired in like early Feb). So we had a local caravan engineer do the service for half AL's cost, which would have also cost like £50 more in petrol had we done it at AL.
Putting my legal hat back on, a manufacturers warranty is a contract even though you don't actually pay Hymer anything. They make a promise and your 'consideration' (legal term) is buying one of their vans. As with all contracts, you cannot be bound by a term that you didnt know about at the time you bought the van. I knew about the 'damp stamp' but I don't recall ever seeing anything that required Hymer authorised service - not saying it's not there but I don't recall it.

On my paperwork which I had to sign it states as below:
All warranty work is conditional upon servicing been carried out at the correct intervals by a Hymer approved service centre and validated with an official Hymer service sticker.

Which will amount to the same thing if Hymer decide to be awkward about it.
I'm sure that there is no caravan equivalent of the motor vehicle Block Exemption regulation though, which inevitably means that Hymer can stipulate with impunity where the servicing is done.
Which is what their e-mail response to John's query does.
