Towing with the table up?

I’m sure I’ve seen this raised before, but can’t find the posts.

So do you tow with the table(s) up in place or packed away / on the floor?
I’m talking about the tables with one leg that fit to the bracket under the window, not the freestanding multi doodahs that are folded and press-studded in place on the seats like the 540.

If you do take them down, what do you do with them? how are they secured?

When I picked up our Triton from AL in 2011, Steve showed me how to store the table flat on the floor and that's what we've done ever since.

I left the table up when I towed the Puck for the first time. Then I thought better not risk it. Tried it face down on the floor but it didn't lay flat and I was worried about stepping on it. In the end it's on the back seat of the car held in by the ridiculously heavy awning.

When we had our '01 540 with a single leg table it never occurred to me that the table needed collapsing before travel. We ran the van for two years (2010 to 2012) and it always stayed attached to the back wall. Thinking about it now it's obvious the risk involved and the damage it could do.

I have owned a 310, 552 and two 430,s since 2003. I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've towed with the table not up.

I never take our table down and have never seen any evidence of it moving eithe sideways or up and down.

My 2015 Familia 320 I tow with the table flat on the floor on a rug and under the bed posts in place. The last 2012 Familia 320 we had I left it up and it quickly loosened all the screws that fixed the plastic strip on the table to the van. The Eriba has a a very rudimentary suspension which will make your peg leg table dance like Michael Flatley merrily to itself with the odd pirouette as it goes over a speed bump...

Strange bloke, that Steve.

We leave the little front one up as it's light but in-store the big one on the floor. It must jump up and down a lot if left in place and it's so heavy....

We always travelled with the front table at bed position, on it's knees. Our folded camping chairs were placed flat across on the dinette seats above, held in position sideways by pillows as packing with towels at the front, so they didn't damage any furniture finishes. The theory being that even under heavy braking the chairs couldn't go anywhere as the gas locker bulkhead was stopping them moving forward.

Oh, and the EHU cable lived under the front table whilst on the move. Easy to put away and then access on arrival.

We have a 2015 Triton. Is there a special storage place/approach to storing the large table flat for travelling? or is it just a case of flattening the leg and wrapping the table in a blanket and popping face up or face down on the floor ?

Thanks,
Dave

Great insights.

re: storing it flat on the floor - how is it secured in place? Doesn’t it shift about when towing and cause the weight/balance to change?

In my experience such items have enough frictional area to hold them in place during normal motoring. However real emergency braking could be another matter. It certainly shouldn't shift enough to cause a material change in noseweight. You can buy adjustable load bars that fit across between bench fronts etc. If you fit a box of something up against the load bar and the table up against the box then it won't go anywhere. If you're worried about the table sliding sideways, than the odd towel either side will buffer it.

I've never tried it but I suspect the table would fit sideways over the gangway, like our camping chairs (above). Bolstered with pillows either side and a towel each side at the front edge it would travel quite safely. The weight of the table can be a bind but it helps to keep it 'grounded' once placed somewhere and it tends not to move about like a lighter one might.

For the benefit of that well known smartarse JohnE, the noble Steve who is not half as strange as I am was merely responding to my complete novice question as to how to prepare the Triton for towing.

As we have a carpet runner at the table end of the van, the table goes top down. In our previous car, an Astra convertible, two Lafuma chairs would fit in the boot but no such luck with the Audi and they have to travel in the Eriba. To do this, we put cushions and pillows on the table and the chairs on top of them. Two Duvalays rolled up in their bags go on the floor in front wedging everything in place quite securely.

Having hit unseen and vicious speed bumps in French villages I have heard the gas bottles come crashing down and can imagine that a table in situ would behave similarly.

As ever, there are no rules, just do what suits you best.

Spapro #11 ...... The large table in a 2015 Eriba has dedicated poppers on the underside which are connected to the two straps with corresponding connectors one under the rear window and one in the fridge side. The table lays flat on the bed secured by these short straps. I think it’s a bodge job!!!
Previous versions had purpose made slots under the bed in its frame and quality gas struts to lift and hold the frame and table up for removal.

As for the smaller dinette table, like Eribamotters, we have had 4 Eribas and always left the table in situ for transit but we did slide it along its rail so that its leg was against the seat cushion.
