Personally I do not think it worth it. I do not want to etch my windows.

I've recieved a reply from the CRiS Business Support Manager. He did reply a couple of weeks ago but the Email didn't get through for some reason.

This is what he says:-

"Good Afternoon,

Thank you for your email.

Unfortunately, the Eriba caravans will currently remain classed as an import caravan.

The reason for this is because many of the manufactures around Europe do not register their caravans with the NCC or with CRiS, this means they are not manufactured with a VIN that follows the UK format and do not include a number of security features that we supply NCC Registered manufacturers.

Because of this, the import and Pre 92 process does incur a seemingly larger cost which is split into two amounts the first is £19.99 this is to perform a provenance check with a number of European law enforcement agencies such as Interpol and Europol, this is to make sure the caravans are not flagged as stolen or involved in any crimes or accidents in and around Europe.

The second part of the £64.99 charge is for the VIN to be created on the database and for a registration document to be provided, it also includes the Vin Chip Upgrade kit which marks the VIN on all of the windows which is a requirement for all caravans that are registered in the UK.

To put the cost into perspective if you were to perform these checks on a UK manufactured caravan you would have to pay £14.95 for a CRiS check, £15.00 for the registration, and £34.99 for the Vin Chip Upgrade kit totalling £64.95 providing a saving of only 4p.

Hopefully this answers your question sufficiently, if you have any other questions or queries please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Kind Regards"

I've thanked him for his reply but have pointed out to him that newer Eribas at least, now seem to conform to the 17 digit UK VIN formate, as per the post #21 Jef prepared.

What is the ‘requirement’ he refers to for the windows to be etched with the vin on all caravans registered in the U.K.?
Isn’t that just the CRiS requirement?
Am I missing something? There is no need or requirement for caravans to be registered in the UK. It’s only CRiS that tries to push this.
It’s a sad state of affairs that the insurance industry appears to have been persuaded that it is a good thing.

And that's the point isn't it. More and more UK insurers are jumping on board with CRiS registration because it gives them a more secure bet. As if we didn't pay enough for insurance anyway

A wider choice of insurance companies was the only reason why I got mine CRiS registered....

My 420 is CRIS registered (by the original owner) . The VIN is in the WHYTR0..... format. Note the window markers are just a set of stickers which are probably hard to remove rather than an etching kit.

Another Email from the CRiS.

Good Afternoon,

Thank you for your email, apologies for the delay in response.

Sorry for any confusion, when it comes to pre 92/imported caravans to avoid any issues such as the one outlined below, if a manufacturer provides a 17 digit chassis number we will use that number and create it as a valid VIN on our database so the details will match on the chassis and the documents.

The only time we would create a new VIN for a caravan is if the chassis number was less than 17 digits in which case we would incorporate the number into a 17 digit VIN that can be saved on our database.

In regards to the provenance check we are not just checking the caravan details are as advised on the documents, the main features of this is to check with foreign police forces with regards to any stolen or fraud watches against the caravan, we also check insurance companies and finance houses to ensure that before we allow registration the caravan is clear and the customer will not encounter any issues in the future.

Any other questions please let me know.

Regards

So, given that my 1990 Puck has a 17 digit number on the plate, a mix of letters and numbers that is. That should be ok to use as a VIN number ?

Tried CRIS to register my van in 2018 but they ignored my request so I gave up. My insurer (Frank Pickles - good cover and price) didn’t seem to be interested in CRIS. I’ve invested the £65 I saved in a couple of bottles of something which will offer more immediate, practical consolation if the van gets nicked.

I renewed my Troll yesterday and there was no mention of CRIS . It was insured the same way last year. If cover 4 issues a contract with you they are bound to honour it if they don't tell that CRIS is a requirement. will check policy doc.

When I bought my Troll from AL in 2018 I asked about CRIS and they said it wasn’t a requirement. When I went to insure it became immediately clear the choice was much narrower without CRIS and some of those that did accept no CRIS registration actually just the Serial number in the CRIS box which I guess has led to some issue arising when insurers have shifted underwriters.
For me, having shelled out a huge chunk of cash for a brand new Troll, £65 CRIS registration was a no brainier. It helped identify my Eriba to me (the only other identifier was an invoice), it opened up the whole insurance market (important when you are a new owner with no towing history), there is some security (not sure how useful in practice this is), it removes questions should I sell to a white box owner (they are used to the CRIS being part of the buying process).
The CRIS fee included registration with certificate, a stick with the number, a chip sticker to hide in the van and a set of stickers for the windows.

The biggest things for me is that I have my van registered to me, and that I can insure with anyone - which has more than saved the initial CRIS registration fee.
