China Beware!!!

When at the Caravan Show last October we went past a stand selling Corelle tableware which is made from tempered glass and is advertised as break resistant and can be used in microwaves and is scratch proof. Our Melamine dinner set is a little tired these days being 16 years old and missing one side plate so we had a look. My credit card hid in the depths of my pocket once we had seen the prices!
Have since donned my deerstalker and investigated what alternatives exist. On Caravan Talk I came across a product called Oftast which is tempered glass tableware and sold by Ikea. The prices are very attractive ie 18 pieces for £9 (dinner plates, side and bowls). As Ikea have yet to venture across the border to the Kingdom of Cornwall I ordered online for delivery (£3.50)
Lo and behold they arrived today via DFD. I checked the box -no damage so excitedly opened it to find the contents well wrapped within box. Unwrapped first bundle and discovered 6 bowls perfect!. 2nd bundle 6 side plates perfect ! This is good I thought until I stated unwrapping the last bundle of dinner plates as I could hear this tinkle sound as I went. Sure enough top 3 plates came in self assembly form whereas the bottom 3 were pre-assembled.
They look good however but certainly not drop proof me suspects. Have informed Ikea and await their response.

Mike, if our experience of missing or incorrect parts from IKEA is typical, then you will have replacements very soon. We had a 2m worktop arrive on a Friday afternoon that was not what we expected. They apologised that they could not get it collected and swapped over on the Saturday, but did so by 9.30am on the Sunday.

we use a lightweight dinner set made from Luminarc, it's also made from toughened glass, if you have a Boyes hardware shop nearby you can buy them individuality.

It looks like we are creatures of [different] habit. We have used melamine since we started camping/trailer tenting back in about 1999. Our current set of plates has been in use since 2003 when our first Eriba was bought, along with some new bowls about 2011 when Eriba number 3 came along. It does its job perfectly but I'd never dream of using this at home where it's plain white for everything.
When away we drink out of glass and white mugs just as we do when at home, it just seems the correct thing to do.

we have some of those glass plates from IKEA. Seem ok to me. What we like about them is that they fit in the overhead lockers whereas the melamine plates we have tried are usually just a little too large.

Lets just say, I haven't broken one ... yet!

We've been using the IKEA Oftast tempered glass crockery at home for well over a year and are very happy with it. Compact, easy to clean and fairly tough. At 50p per piece we've stocked up for our Eriba too, I don't mind the odd breakage at that price! Much nicer than melamine to eat off also.

I bought a set of bamboo plates and bowls when I bought my Eriba and they cheer me up whenever I use them. And they fit in the overhead lockers at the front.

I recognise the bowls. they are Orla Kiely. Very nice. I'm guessing you would also like the Missprint range. fabrics and crockery with a similar 50's vibe. Our duvet and cushion covers in the Eriba are by them.

Absolutely Colin. I like a bit of retro chic and think it suits the Eriba well.

That Orla Kiely & Missprint stuff looks great, are there any other designs I should be looking at?

Google is your friend on this one as Missprint used to do some of there range in melamine and Orla Kielly crops up in some unexpected places at bargain prices. I have seen in in Dunelm at times.
