Spare steel wheel central bore size.
Spare steel wheel central bore size.

Hello this is my first venture onto this site so please bear with me. I'll be as succinct as possible. We have had a Puck 230L GT from new in 2006. Uneven tyre wear (always the inside edges, offside worst) from the start requiring new tyres every 2000 miles or so. We have had 3 new axles from Hymer but no improvement. Hymer no longer want to assist us. We always travel light and haven't hit the kerb as they suggested. Had a new axle made with a higher load bearing capacity which seems to be working, problem is whilst the alloys fit the new hubs the steel spare doesn't as the central bore hole on it is 56mm and needs to be 60mm. Does any one know where I might obtain one? The engineer who supplied and fitted the new axle rightly said he wouldn't be able to enlarge the central bore as it would compromise the integrity of the wheel. The wheel size is 155/80 R13, 4 stud. Any advice would be appreciated. That's it, I hope I haven't out stayed my welcome!

How about phoning the likes of https://www.oponeo.co.uk/steel-wheels?gc...rMaAr4xEALw_wcB
Have ready all the details stamped onto your existing steel rim so they know the pcd and offset. aswell as the usual diameter and intended tyre width. I think it's called J size.

But on a more serious note; during the investigations into your excessive tyre wear, did Hymer or the axle manufactures (Al-Ko / BPW) check the caravan's chassis alignment?

Thanks John. Three Hymer dealers have checked the chassis. All appears OK. One said he had replaced at least 12 BPW/Alko axles because of similar problems to ours. Indeed the same dealer said he would check alignment on a replacement axle before fitting and had returned several because they were faulty. Not very encouraging!

Colin, you are correct I have spoken to several Puck L owners in the past who have had similar problems with uneven tyre wear not always rectified by a replacement axle. As mentioned in my initial enquiry to the forum we now have a new bespoke made axle that has an increased load bearing capacity, courtesy of stronger, and a greater amount of, torsion rubber. The engineer who sorted this for us specialises in axles, especially for caravans, and his opinion was that the original axles were under rubbered and therefore not robust enough for what they were supposed to support. I guess he knows what he is talking about as the problem seems to be sorted after 14 years of the dealers unsuccessful attempts.

Thanks to all who offered advice on the subject especially JohnE whom I would like to inform that I did manage to source a 60.5mm hole but it came attached to several kilograms of steel and rubber! Never mind, I did learn a lot about numbers, symbols and marks that are liberally applied to rims and tyres. It now all makes sense.
It is nice to know there is a friendly forum out there and I will certainly dip in and contribute if and when I am able.
