Jockey wheel replacement
Jockey wheel replacement

I aim to replace the jockey wheel on our 91 Pan Familia since the winding handle is now dozed, and the solid tyre is a bit tired. A bit of measurement tells me I need a standard 48mm. Presumably a heavy duty version also. Apart from that, can anyone tell me if there is anything else I need to look out for before I buy one? Static and dynamic nose weights specs spring to mind.
Advice appreciated as always.

Most prefer a solid tyre as opposed to a pneumatic. Get as wide as you can. Ideally try and source an Alko Premium with built in noseweight gauge. They are expensive but often come up as good second hand examples on the likes of Gumtree as well as e-bay.

Hi FCMan
My Alko jockey wheel got damaged and I have replaced it this evening with a Kartt Turn Lok unit (as recommended and developed with the C & M Club)This has been a simple job and seems to work well. We are going away this weekend when I can try it out on a hard standing & report back.
It seems heavier duty than the original Alko and comes with good reviews. The C & M Club was about £70 including postage but I got one for £40 post free from EBay Wilmond Engineering.
I will be putting a thread on it soon with some photos (hopefully)

Thanks Colin.
What I'm more interested in is the minimum static nose load rating of a jockey wheel that would be required to suit our van. The alko premium is out of my budget btw. Anyway, using bathroom scales and a piece of wood the nose weight of our van will not go below 68kg with everything loaded on the centre. It should probably be nearer 50 kg I would imagine. Short of taking the gas bottles out of the locker and loading the back of the van more (a no no), I can't see how a lower nose weight could be achieved. I mean, are Pan familia's naturally nose heavy with the kitchen and fridge at the front?

You need to know the maximum load on your towbar and the maximum load on your caravan drawbar then aim to get your noseweight as near as possible to the lower of the two.
With our Triton, getting the noseweight high enough was the problem but this was easily achieved once I'd fitted the bike rack and mounted two bikes.

Aaron. Thanks for the clear answer. The towbar weight is 75kg max. I don't have the information on the max drawbar weight unfortunately - no idea where to look for that. Anyway, using the 7% of gross laden weight (850kg) ball park rule gives me 59.5 kg nose weight. Either way I'll have to reduce weight.
Ps: I've just bought a Kartt solid wheel jockey btw. Time to put this obsession to bed.

Ok so turns out I have the caravans owners manual. 75kg max nose weight on the manufacturer's ID plate. So 55 to a bit less than 75 and I'm happy.
Thanks all for the advice.
