Jockey Wheel Tyre Replacement Help Please

Hello,

(I know this has been discussed many times before but I want to make sure I order the correct item as it is difficult to get to the storage during lockdown).

For my 310, I am on to my 2nd tyre for the jockey wheel as the previous one kept deflating over quite a short period of time. The replacement is now doing the same and I thought I'd go for a solid one instead. Not being overly competent, last time I replaced it I managed to do it whilst it was hooked up to the car by removing the split pin, adding the new wheel and replacing the pin with another.

I need advice on which solid one to order so it will fit without any hassle. See picture attached. I thought I had all the details I needed but, when I look on some sites they mention the spindle size. Some say 19mm some 20. I think 20mm is the most common.

Thanks,
Philip.

Did you see this thread? Jockey wheel. Air was leaking through the tread of mine.

If the tyre is otherwise good, it would be a lot cheaper simply to fit an inner tube.

The holes in the nylon bushings in the wheel I removed measure 20.25mm.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.
I was thinking of getting a solid one as they do not seem to remain inflated.

Philip

You might want to check out this thread from September about replacing the full jockey wheel with a solid Kart Loc jockey wheel. For about £40 you can get this new jockey wheel that has a special locking mechanism that stops it unwinding as you drive along. Colin (fishculture) and I both put these on and were really pleased with the result. It is dead simple to replace the whole jockey wheel.

Just a thought as you are thinking of going solid wheel

Thanks Mike.

I have placed my order. Hopefully, it will arrive in the next couple of days.

I understand the replacement procedure, but I am a bit nervous about attempting it. I've seen videos of people putting their carvan on quite an angle and using blocks on the front steadies to get the old one out of the A frame as it goes through the middle. Is this necessary on an Eriba? Also, I guess the caravan is fine standing on its own two wheels without the jockey wheel proving any support if it is missing?

hi Philip

I am pretty useless at technical things but I managed it no problem. If you go on the Kartt website or on the Caravan & Motorhome Club link to Kartt there are some really simple instructions to follow. There are also links to other YouTube videos where people have filmed themselves doing the replacement.

You must have your steadies down when you do it. Some people drop the rear steadies down a bit to lift the front up but I didn't bother. When I had raised the original jockey wheel up I put some wood under the hitch to keep it up - just in case.

The Jockey wheels split in half by you unscrewing them so you can get them out of the holder. Then split the new jockey wheel in half and then put it in place to replace the old one. Then raise up the new one. simples really..

There is also another thread on the Forum showing how to do it - I will have a look to see if I can find it - apologies I have memory problems.

As I say I was initially a bit wary of doing the job myself but I took it slowly and double checked everything as I went along. Ended up quite proud of myself...............!

All done. As many have said, if you follow the instructions it is a straightforward procedure.

Thanks to Mike and everyone who commented.

An Impressive looking job Philip.

You should see the benefit when you manoeuvre the van on a dodgy hardstanding.

I can feel the start of an Eriba Folk orange Kartt jockey wheel special interest sub-group - I can think of Colin (Fishculture) and Dave (Eribanaut) and us two as starters that I am aware of. Perhaps Randa can design us a special badge.......................

Sorry been off the radar for a while. We have tried our Kartt a few times on tarmac to loose gravel to grass. Not so good on loose gravel but definitely more manoeuvrability overall than our old Alko solid wheel jockey
