Worried about one of my legs

Got plates and pins in both after several fractures below the knees, yet been great since discharge from hospital last August and done loads of walking, some Eriba meets and gym exercises since.

Last night after a 2 mile New Forest walk in the hash, sat in the pub (where else?) and when I got up to move around and circulate, the left leg clunked and pain shot through it. Thought about a rest overnight would be fine but no. Got urgent appointment with doc at 4pm and she sent me to A&E with her letter.

2 hours later after several XRays they referred me to the Fracture clinic AGAIN, I thought I had seen the last of that place after 2013. Now await a letter of appointment, but it's worrying. The swelling which has been there since discharging me, suggests possible bone infection!! Eek! Now on serious antibiotics for a week.

I now worry about my hashing, got a heavy w/end ahead and the proposed Eriba outings.

I broke both my arms (seperately) when I was a kid, sobat least 50 years ago. One was reasonably uncomplicated and re-set and I wore an old style brace on it for 10 weeks! That arm suffered from hypercalceria which is a build up around the affected area. The other arm was broken in 2 places, again it was re-set (no anaesthetic) and a brace again but for 12 weeks, hypercalceria again. Both arms are "swollen" around the joint area to this day, and my right arm is not and cannot be straightened. I have pain, everyday, but I'm lucky in that respect, I can "put it aside" so I don't feel it so much. Legacy problems occur and it's best to get these sorted if and when you can.

Saying all that I did 24 years in the military and did some pretty "hairy" stuff with no problems. Mind over matter, I'll avoid the obvious I'll let someone else say it. Best of luck with your problem and hope you get it sorted.

sorry to hear, perhaps venture the eriba but restrict walking mileage, perhaps use a electric bike, could be interesting regarding styles
is your vitamin D level ok? think something to do with bones
good luck hoping you recover quickly

Thanks and cheers for the goodwill and advice. At the moment, the two doses of antibiotice seem to have sorted some of the pain out although leg still clunks when moved, but not completely having just been in to Winchester by bus to collect my unselected art work. Now waiting for referral to the fracture clinic for their opinion.

Never knew anti whats its are pain killers and maybe it's the hopeful side of my brain.

Thanks, now got an appointment with fracture clinic next Tuesday and hopefully with the consultant who dealt with me previously.

The xrays revealed that one of the screws/pins had moved and the plate had a slight deviation so that doesn't fill me with confidence. They may have to remove them. Oh dear more surgery but if it works.

Ouch, hope surgery can be avoided. Took daughter (21) to see consultant today. Had one op a couple of years ago on left knee, now needs an op on right knee and then a further op on left knee eventually. Not good news but better than constantly dislocating knees. Son in law had to have a second op to remove wrongly fitted plate from broken shoulder injury. Do hope yours can be sorted with least possible trauma.

Thanks Julie, the young ones can heal better so they say, but not a happy situation for her and him.

Just back from fracture clinic and I haven't got a screw loose - no need all to laugh at once! I have broken one of the plates. Today's XRays show it clearly, hence the clunking. Now concern if the bone has healed properly and last week X Rays don't give full picture so now back in for CT scan. They don't think my bone is infected but also got a blood test when the CT is done which will show it . If bones are OK they will remove part or all of the plate. Wait to hear but hopefully soon.

Sent out with an airboot on it for stabalisation, plus crutches for any extended walking - unlikely, but I will do my rota duty at the art exhibition on Thursday.

Good that it is no longer a "mystery". Knowing the problem is most of the way to a cure, ( I think ! !) Very much hope that the repairs will be swift and relatively not too much inconvenience to you :)

Enjoy the Art Exhibition as much as you can - speedy full recovery

Yes that's me all over, extend whatever it is. It is a mystery to me too, the consultant said these things do happen but I can't remember a particular moment on the Monday night when I jolted it really badly and the pain and clunking didn't occur straight away. I am told they are quite thick and presumably of titanium or St steel. Will hope to keep the piece they remove.
Looks like our Eriba habits may cease for this year, but hope not.
