I have used the 303 Fabric Guard on my 1999 Puck. Applied it in situ after giving the poptop a good clean to remove any grime. Not too much trouble and it does a good job.

It's an absolutely cracking, warm and sunny day on the South Coast so this morning I've used 303 Fabric Guard on both my car roof and the caravan pop-top.
At the moment it is drying in the sunshine so I can't comment on the waterproofing effectiveness but applying it was dead easy, just spray it on to saturate the fabric, wipe off any overspray and let it dry for 6-12 hours depending on ambient temperature.
Agger was right, if I'd used Renovo (which is water-based) it would have run off the fabric whereas the solvent-based 303 just soaked into the vertical canvas.
I ordered two 16oz bottles from Zizy Pools but one had leaked in transit. I emailed the suppliers and they are sending me a replacement free of charge with their profuse apologies so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Hi Brian, did you remove the canvas? I'm just after feedback as someone else said it might not be necessary interested to know your thoughts glad it worked out well, mine is really repellant now, and I'm so pleased I took the time to do it

Hi Brian, did you remove the canvas?
And what did you use to clean the canvas before re-proofing it? Randa
I left it in place, Graham, as I was pushed for time and just wiped up the overspray with kitchen roll. It took about 30 mins in total and it had more or less dried by sunset when I put the roof down for the night. I'll give it a good clean in another 11 years by which time it should be ready for its second re-proofing.
I used Renovo soft top cleaner on the car and I'm sure that it would be ideal for the pop-top canvas too.
You've made me feel guilty now, you rotters.

Many thanks Brian, as I say just interested, different schools of thought on whether to remove the canvas or not, I'm not sure myself whether it's necessary but I was worried about the "303 does'nt like fibreglass" comments on the bottle and from something I read elsewhere
Glad you achieved your aim though, well done

Isn't modern car paint now water based along with many other types?
[/quote]
I may be wrong but apparently its just the base coat that's water based on modern cars, the primers and clear are still 2 pack , When this paint is being sprayed, the spray can be considered as dangerous as cyanide gas.......

Yes you are right about been careful not to get the 303 on the fibreglass, its on the back of the bottle. Basically It should not get into contact with any plastics or rubber.

I can't open that link to Crow's comments in the first thread, but I have used Fabsil each year and to no problem so far.

Quote: hampshireman wrote in post #27This is one example, from the American Boat Owners' Association. Sunbrella is acrylic canvas:
Thanks and haven't seen any negative reasons on Fabsil.
"Do not use a waterproofing treatment that contains silicone on acrylic canvas. This is important. Silicone is incompatible with the original treatment. The factory waterproofing chemical, which is a fluorocarbon, will repel the silicone, resulting in patchy coverage. The silicone is also likely to compromise the stain-resistance of the fabric.
The best treatment for acrylic canvas is a fluoropolymer-based product. This type of treatment is compatible with the original finish, and it gives excellent and long-lasting results.
Waterproofers that have a petroleum-based vehicle have demonstrated better performance on acrylic canvas than water-based treatments. You can identify a petroleum-based product by its strong odor."
If you Google 'Fabsil Sunbrella', 'reproofing Sunbrella silicone' or any similar combination of search terms, you'll find that the predominant advice is not to use Fabsil on Sunbrella.

As mentioned previously, I decided to use 303 Fabric Guard on both my car roof and the pop-top canvas. Being vertical, it would be difficult to show how effective this product is on the caravan canvas but, in case anyone was wondering, here's a picture of the car roof after a short cloudburst this morning.

I have to say that this a better result than previously obtained with other specialist products and I'm well pleased.

I think the 303 bonds with the sunbrella fabric where the Fabsil merely coats it.
If I was doing this job (which is lets face it a once every decade type of job) I would
buy the best which in my opinion would be the 303.
