Can we torque wrenches?

I don't know if others have read the letter in the March 2015 edition of the CC magazine entitled "Lets Torque" (page 52)? For those who don't subscribe to the magazine, it's about a caravanner who, having recently had their van serviced, didn't subsequently check the torque on the wheel nuts/studs and as a consequence lost their wheel on the M5.
I'm "bracing" myself for the flak but have to admit to never owning a torque wrench. In nearly 50 years of motoring I've always used a telescopic wheel wrench or spider to tighten wheel nuts.
I'm here to listen and learn however.

According to the PDF of the Eriba manual the torque figures for steel wheels is 100Nm and 120 for alloys. According to this, the stud torque for your car is 120Nm.
Were you to have alloys, I reckon you could safely use the wheel brace that came with the car. That wheel brace is made the length it is so that when you give it a reasonable heave it will tighten the car's studs to about 120Nm.
120Nm is a very common torque setting for car wheel studs.
Our Audi's are 120, as are the alloys on the van, so I'm happy with checking the van stud torque with the car wheel brace.
If the two sets of figures are wildly different I think a torque wrench might be a prudent investment.

I do have a torque wrench, and I do use it. It rolls up nicely in the RAV's toolroll and fits just right in its cubbyhole. But my main reason for using it is that its length makes tightening the nuts easier, and once it achieves the pre-set correct tightness, that's it, you don't overdo it.

Oh, stripped thread, rounded flats, never being able to get the nut undone again without the assistance of an alpha-male caveman, pulled muscle, dislocated shoulder, exophthalmia ...

I carry a torque wrench in the car at all times. As has already been stated, it's a lot kinder to the wheel nuts for one thing let alone your own back. What's not been stated yet, though, and very important - is that you should never undo the wheel nuts using a torque wrench as it messes up the calibration for one thing and also it was never designed to undo although some do go into reverse.

So using that theory, an 8st lady and an 18st rugby playing man using this spider will arrive at the same torque, I don't think so.

I ought to have added that the car handbook does advise getting the torque of the studs checked after changing a wheel, for which I apologise most humbly.
Having said that, I am aware that Roger, who asked the question, is not an 8st lady. And I'm not either.

I have a torque wrench from Aldi, I always check the nuts and I also use those plastic nut indicators that you see on lorries which will show if they have moved. Another tip is don't use copper slip or grease on the threads, they have to be dry tightened.....

hehehe clicky talk
must admit to only using one (well the calibrated one) for head bolts and wheels for many years, but only bought one last year
must wind off spring after using, amazon sell them, inside says the calibration lasts for a year before needing renewing.
must admit you get used to the feel of tightness
the above sentence was edited it sounded sooo rude lol
there are the rachet type or the click bar type
good to have as a safety device

Good point raised by Pop540 - don't leave the toque set on the wrench; always wind off back to zero after use which releases the spring tension thus preserving usable life.
