I don't believe we will need to wait too long before the dust settles and processes become understood and acceptable. The points raised by Randa are not major obstacles I believe.
I'm old enough to remember having to apply for an International Drivers Licence, from memory from the RAC back then. With the increase of demand more post offices (if you can find one) will start providing them. It is likely an online application will be created in time. We already need to provide an online proof of a clean driver's licence when booking car hires, something similar will be created.
As for the E1 11 I wonder how many have relied on that as their only safeguard? I for one am always insured when travelling. My next door neighbour has just returned from Portugal where she collected a broken foot and a 800 euro hospital bill and yes she showed her E1 11. The bottom line is we shouldn't travel without the correct insurance.
Visas are becoming more common elsewhere in the world. I remember having to queue at the American embassy for hours to get a stamp in my passport. Then we stopped having to get them but now we need them again, as with Canada. Some countries just ask for a waiver form to be filled on arrival, no big shakes. Providing you don't get conned by so called visa providers and use the correct online application methods it is easy.
I for one will be out of the country (and Europe) when the change happens. No doubt there will be chaos for a while but more down to the poor souls on the ground having to process and cope with the orders from above. As for our relationship with locals is concerned that has always been down to our own ability to get on with them on a personal level. Shouting louder at them with a bottle of beer in your hand never worked in the past and still won't. French farmers will continue to block the ports when they are upset because they know how much it hurts their government financially, that won't change either.

It appears AVIVA has jumped the gun and started to look at the post Brexit effect on claims. Today I have received the renewal quote for our joint worldwide travel insurance (incl USA etc) with them. Last year we paid £192, this year they want £492!
When asked why they were intent on giving me a heart attack they said the policy and quote was correct and they wouldn't consider changing it. They wouldn't give a reason why such a hike considering nothing has changed in our circumstances and we hadn't claimed.
Could this be they expect a huge part of their clients to start claiming for treatment in the EU when the E1 11 is removed from us or is it the usual shaft the loyal customer they won't go elsewhere..?
It would be interesting to see if anyone else suffers the same with their own insurers over the coming months.

I was wondering about this. Do travel insurers currently have the ability to claim back some treatment costs from other EU country health services? If so and in the absence of any agreement that such an arrangement will continue, you can understand the need for a jump in premium. But as you say it might just be the usualvinsurance company try on.

An old friend, Glyn, was staying with us in Umbria and was taken seriously ill and blue lighted between hospital. His EHIC was requested on arrival and that paid for his three weeks of excellent care, not his insurance. It would seem that if taken ill in Europe, in the majority of instances i.e. Your not in a private hospital, your medical insurance is actually a repatriation insurance. In Glyn's case this amounted to three seats on Easyjet with an accompanying nurse, not the private jet he was hoping for
AVIVA would seem to be avin a larf.

A couple of weeks ago my sil needed to see a doctor and a specialist and we were told that his NHS European card covers you but you have to claim it back. It pays up front for your care if you have to go to hospital.

It's quite scary if I were to be I'll in england, i would have to pay for everything. I suppose that's normal, though as I've been here and worked here for nearly 30 years and all my finances are here.

When we looked into this just before Xmas, we were not allowed to purchase IDP until less than three months before we inteded to travel and, of the 89 Post Offices they claim you can purchase one, only TWO are in Wales.
Also, looking at this new link it looks like you'll need a different one for Spain (IDP 1949) whereas the rest of Europe and a lot of non EU countries, you'll need an IDP 1968

Oh, I'm as confused as a politician.
I'm due out to France May 18th, car insurance expires September and have always chosen my car insurance company on the basis they include full European cover to the same level as my UK cover. Looks like I will have to wait for the "deal" and then contact insurance company.
