Just been looking more at carrying maybe two 3.9kg bottles to keep my nose weight down. I’ve been weighing one trying to guess how much is in. Looked on calor website & empty they go from 4.1 to 8.6. It’ takes the you no what. That is some hell of a tolerance, more than double !!
I’ve traded a shell 4.7 bottle in to flogas today for one of their 3.9kg bottles as calor locally have no bottles ! Flogas seem to take almost any make of bottle to exchange, bit easier than dealing with calor

Calor gas bottles should have the weight stamped on them somewhere. It may take a bit of locating under the layers of paint.

On Calors website it says the 3.9kg bottle empty weighs anything from 4.1 to 8.6kg. It's crazy, if your trying to calculate how to keep your nose weight down? Plus Calor dont help with their calorLite bottle They say its not going to be replaced, i rang AVL and thay say they had ordered 20 calorlite bottles & got 20 normal bottles! So even if you had a lite version & you run out your liable to have to change it for a normal one
They really really need some very stiff competition, they don't give a rat's. I know have a flogas 3.9 & managed to locate eventually another 3.9 calor in an attempt to keep my nose weight down. If i was going to be able to use my caravan much i think i would go for the Safefill route just to be able to stick two fingers up at calor.

For my Calorlite 6kg I have empty weight of 4.15kg, ful weight 10.52kg.
I would sy the 4.1 to 8.6 kg range you have is the empty and full weights range, not that of an empty bottle.

Does the cylinder you're weighing have a flat circular metal collar round the neck with the tare stamped on it? Some do, apparently.

Although it won't help in establishing how much gas is in your cylinder, a quick rummage on the net suggests that the average gross weight of a cylinder that size is just shy of 10kg, so I reckon I'd use that figure less 3.9 as a reasonable starting point for an empty weight.

It's clearly an imprecise science, so an educated guess will probably have to suffice.

Alternatively, if you wanted to find out how much gas actually is in yours, you could always let it out into a bin bag of a known weight and then weigh the bag when it's full of gas. The difference, clearly, is the weight of gas in the bag. Depending on how much is in there - and how big your bin bags are - you might need to do this more than once, so some basic arithmetic skills (as well as a pencil and a piece of paper) would be handy.

I'm not sure you'll be able to get the gas back in the cylinder once you've weighed it, but since you only mention wanting to know how much gas is left and not that you necessarily want to use it, I'll assume that you don't.

Be careful.

It might be an idea not to spark up a cig while you're weighing the gas or you might find yourself retrieving your toupee and eyebrows from different counties.

Bonne chance.

I'm only using the empty weight as a bench line because gas who ever you buy it off weighs the same. Going back to the empty cylinder weight, the weights i am quoting are Calors own figures for (3.9kg size) an empty bottle 4.1kg to 8.6kg empty!! The only thing i can presume is that they have had different bottles made over the years by different manufactures and to what ever standard!

I've seen those figures.

It could conceivably be a misprint, though ringing Calor HQ up and asking them directly is an option.

It seemed to me that essentially you were attempting to establish the weight of an empty cylinder, and notwithstanding Calor's unhelpful figures I thought that looking up the gross weight and subtracting the weight of the contents might provide you with a more satisfactory answer.

It would appear on the face of it that if you do it that way the margin of error is in the region of a kilo rather than in excess of four.

I wouldn't pretend to know, but I'd hazard a guess that a single kilo or thereabouts isn't going to cock up your weight distribution too much.

You could check the level gas this way - it does work for Calor metal bottles

Fill up a jug or bottle with warm water pour it down the side of the gas bottle then using your hands feel for a temperature change on the bottle. the part that `s cold to touch will indicate how much gas is left.

Hi,
Newbie here! We’re waiting for our 540 delivery nex March but I have a few questions. Trying to keep them on-thread so here’s my cylinder query;-
I’ve got a 10kg safefill from my big regular gas-locker; I measured the space during a viewing but it seems tight!
Has anyone fitted a 10kg or am I going to be buying a 7.5 next year?
We do a good bit of rallying hence the large capacity.👍

By the way @Pepé, I had to check your gas-weighing suggestion wasn’t posted on April 1st 🧐
I’m struggling to think of a more dangerous operation- am I missing a punchline somewhere? 🙂🙃

Steve
We have a 7.5kg Safefill and a calorlite backup. Wouldn’t like to try anything bigger.
Pics somewhere on an earlier post.

Thanks CC,
I calculated that there’s about 1cm clearance from the top of the cylinder to the torque bars across the top of the locker, so it will be tight, but it was even worse in my BWB because of the lip around the locker. At least the Troll opening is pretty much flush.
I guess we’ll have to learn patience and wait for delivery.
BTW - I’ve had the Safefill about 2 1/2 years and it’s already paid its way - a full 10kg lasts around 3-4 days in winter with no hook-up.
Steve.

My calendar has been stuck on April the first for years.

Have a rummage around in your cupboard and see if you can find your less serious trousers.

I use Calor lite, they are still using them but I would assume there are not as many about after they recalled them. I weigh mine with bathroom scales when they are full and write the weight with a marker pen on the bottle, I then have a rough idea when they are getting ready to change out. My last one weighed just over 10kg with a 6kg fill.

When I go on holiday I like to pop my top!
