Just curious as to what brand/model of gas bottle most people use. It’s trying to have something lightweight to keep nose weight down versus cost & availability.

We used to use a lightweight plastic BP Gaslight. I think they may now be marketed as Flogas. This was a slightly oversize in diameter bottle and I needed to move the gas locker straps. We now use a lightweight metal Calorlite with a Campigaz 907. There has been talk over the last couple of years about non availability of the Calorlite but we've had no issues. The Campingaz is used for the Cadac and as a back up if the Calorlite ran out when abroad. Campingaz is an expensive way to buy gas but refills are readily available throughout Europe on campsitees and in supermarkets. Calor is not available on the continent.
FloGas are worth a look. The cannister is very similar in weight and size to the Calorlite and we would consider this as a logical replacement if/when the Calorlite is no longer available.

Hi Colin
Any reason why you changed from the flogas if it’s the same cylinder as the the gaslight to the calor light. Also if you were using the flogas bottle would you use the 5 or 10 kg bottle?

Fitting a larger diameter plastic bottle next to a Campingaz is a very tight fit, if you want to get anything else in the gas locker, hence the change.
Whichever make you decide upon you have to go with the smaller 5-6 kg bottles.

Thanks for that, the pictures help. I wonder how long before calor have their new bottle out that is supposed to be in development and what size it will be that is if it ever happens. I have a Thule so called smart I think bike rack fitted by the dealer (adventure leisure) when I bought my eriba & just trying to keep the nose weight down and gas bottles seemed one of the obvious first things + things like flush tank on loo. I don’t even put much in my kitchen (320) & my bike is carbon fibre.

I'm lucky wit my 430 in that it is easy to get a nice noseweight. At present it is in the garage with all the usual stuff in it ready for a short/light trip, ie ready for food and clothes to go in. Noseweight is round about 55/60kg. If I add two bikes to the back and lay awning on the floor at the front it stays about the same. Add food and clothes and again it stays about the same.

Calor now say that a new lightweight cylinder is unlikely to be produced.

Is there a problem with the Calor lightweight cylinders?

We are on our original one that we bought in 2011 as we always use EHU and gas is only there as emergency backup.

There's a hell of a difference in cost to fill calor versus safefill but the bottles are expensive and i suppose you make your choice. if your using a lot of gas it sounds like the safefill wins hands down, i'm not using a lot but it would allow me to keep my nose weight low and save on the refil price. its just swallowing the 150-160 ish for a bottle. one other thing is the lightweight bottle is a larger diameter and calor are more available

Does anyone have a picture of one of the later generation Safefill gas bottles installed in any of the various sizes?

We use one 7.5kg Safefill and one backup calorlite.
Picture attached - hopefully!

Have you found any down side from using the safefill bottle? + how have you found availability, I’m also presuming the safefill is slightly bigger diameter

I replaced the pigtail for the Safefill recommended, hand tighten, one (much better and cost around £18). When I bought the cylinder two years ago it was around £120 but it might be a bit more now. The main benefits are weight - I dropped 20 kg off the noseweight - and I can call into my local distributor before any serious trip and top up the cylinder. The cylinder holds 80% max and I have only ever let it get to 20% at which point it costs me about £8 to fill it. Availability can be an issue, although apparently Morrison’s LPG garages have been told they can allow you to fill them via their LPG pumps. I have a local dealer in Ashbourne, Derbyshire who does the necessary. Best check the Safefill website for a local dealer.
You can get adapters for most, if not all, European countries but being able to set off with a full tank means I wouldn’t bother unless you are intending to be fully off-grid.
The bottom line is that you’ll never justify Safefill if it’s down to cost alone, but I like the weight advantage and the ability to set off with a full tank on any serious trip.
The bottle is slightly bigger but as you see from the photo it fits. I’m also considering ditching the calor bottle which has never been used in the two years it has been there. I’m thinking about replacing it with a small patio gas bottle for the Weber barbeque.

I've been looking at weights of Safefill & Calor. Safefill 7.5kg bottle empty is 4.1kg, Calor say there 6kg bottle is anything from 7.3 to 10.9, that a hell of a difference from 7.3 to 10.9!! If i buy a Safefill bottle apart from being able to just top up & the cost of the gas & see how much is in the bottle the weight difference is only going to be min 3.2kg up to 6.8kg!! i was expecting a bigger difference. Calor availability in uk is a lot handier, I had been going to buy the Safefill bottle thinking i would make my nose weight a lot better but if i could get hold of a calorlite i think i would just do that.
Obviously gas weighs the safe who ever you buy it off.

Ok but if you have 2 bottles the difference could be up to 13.6kg all of which pretty much adds to the nose weight because the bottles are up front; and that makes quite a difference... That said, the hefty upfront cost of Safefill bottles must be quite painful and would take a lot to justify.
