Tyres?
Quote: hob wrote in post #29Given the very low annual mileages covered by most of our caravans when compared with the commercial vehicles for which the tyres we use are intended, does this make sense?
My reasoning is I buy the best quality I can afford
I shall soon be getting rid of three tyres based on age alone that are currently showing no signs of wear or deterioration and I doubt if the spare has ever been out of its cradle. Every non-caravannerto whom I mention age-related tyre replacement looks at me as if I've gone mad.
Just a thought, but wouldn't a set of budget range tyres be more appropriate?

my sentiments exactly. The 2006 tyres I have in the van are perfect (seemingly) and I know that for all its life, when not in use, it has been stored inside, so no ageing of the tyres through sunlight etc..
However, safety first dictates, I guess, particularly as I have just planned a 700 mile drive in June..
To your point, what's wrong with these? http://tinyurl.com/zylzth5 And, as mine look in good order and a spare is to get you out of trouble, I'm seriously contemplating moving one of the current road tyres onto the spare..

Would it be wise to use a nine year old as a spare?

these might also be an option...

The advantage here being fitted is included. The other one we (i) have been looking at, are supply only, so you still have to arrange fitting, disposal etc...
My plan is to take a list of a couple or three to my tyre fitter and see which they can order in
whichever I will order three I'm a great believer in not mixing tyres
The ones on there have done 3000 miles in the last 3 years (don't know what they did in the first three)

The spare currently fitted is 15 years old, got to be better than that! My approach would always be to get a puncture repaired at the earliest opportunity, so even though the spare would be 9 years old, I would only see it as a get me back on the road as I drove to get the puncture repaired. Is that a risk? I guess you could say yes, but a risk I think I would be prepared to take...
We took the Runway budget tyres off our Troll last Spring after 5 years. Admittedly one let us down while we were away. It's difficult to work out how many miles those tyres have given us but it was in the order of 5 x 3 month trips to the continent . Therefore at least 10,000 miles.
Incidentally, the "brand new" Dunlop SP spare we were obliged to fit while in Spain, was dated 1998 and had been under the van from new. For the previous couple of years, our friendly local tyre specialist had passed it as OK. We had no problems with that tyre for the next 1500 miles but only thought to replace it along with the other two, this time last year. Even then we were advised to keep it as a Spare spare
Our new set of budget tyres cost us around £50 each including fitting and balancing from our local specialist. We've not looked at them yet this year but they did us proud last year and we put about 4000 miles on them.

AL seem to put budget tyres on all the vans they sell that need tyres replaced due to age, mostly Runway, and there haven't been any complaints on this forum. I needed to replace my Runways before my first trip at Easter and went to my local independent tyre fitter and he recommended another budget make for £35 fitted. I'm going to risk another year with the spare as I have alloys and so the spare is only to get me home or to the next town and I'm not planning on going very far in one trip (certainly not abroad), and due to the fact its not been used and out of UV light I hope it can last 100 miles at steady speed!

Rotalla 165/80 R13 83T. This is on a 2005 Familia and is exactly the size and weight loading as the previous tyres put on by AL prior to selling to the previous owner.

Thanks Jason. The 83 rating is probably a little too low for me as my Troll weighs in at a bit more than your Familia. However, using the Rotalla brand, a further search has led me here:

even though Rotalla aren't mentioned.
Been and ordered 3 new tyres
165/ R13C 94/92 Q
So load index 670/630 and speed index 99Mph
Can't remember the make off hand but am told they are a good mid range tyre for caravans and trailers.
should cost about £55.50 each fitted.

For others looking into fitting new tyres in the future the recommended tyre size in the hand book.

For Triton 430 1000 Kg axle 185/70 R13
185/70 R13 Is just about impossible to find with a load rating higher than 86 (530Kg)
Which X 2 = 1060 Kg which I thought a bit close to the limit and my 430 Triton has the fridge and cooker unit to one side over one of the wheels so I wondered if the weight on that tyre was more than the other side, but its probably counter balanced by the loo being the other side.
Anyway being a bit concerned about the 530 Kg rating I went for something with a bit higher load index which meant looking at light commercial and trailer tyres.

My local car showroom has a workshop area where they service my car, they do tyres too, they buy them in from some local wholesale place and they deliver next day.
I will probably take the spare in to be done tomorrow, they might even let me take the van and do the other two while I wait.
Will see what make they are when I get the spare done.
