Thetford Toilet Impeller Pump Jam - Solution

Hi all, just thought I would post up a solution to a pump jam which may save work of changing it when you think it has given up a ghost.
Last year I had an issue as I wasn't using the loo and it seized, and was told by the Eriba shop to stop start rather than hold down to unfreeze it. That worked well and unjammed it This year I had been good when storing and lubricated parts and used the pump infrequent to make sure it was not sticking. The last trip out meant only over a couple of weeks the pump again was on stop. Power going to it but no impeller rotating.
Today I took out the pump after some difficulty, it really is a tight squeeze! tried the impeller but it was firm and didn't look clogged so I think something was jamming it internally.
First I tried to use tank cleaner, nope didn't work. So I think the black grunge that seems to build up with the Thetford pink stuff must have been inside the pump housing as pipe was black mould. So I then mixed up Puriclean in warm water and left it to soak in the system for an hour. Tried the pump again and hey presto - problem solved and pump now working fine.
So before anyone replaces the pump if you can hear power going to it, try Milton or puriclean in the toilet flush tank and let it soak then pulse the motor and it may start working again and unfreeze.
PS - try the Puriclean solution before dismantling it all!! it will save the difficulty of getting the pump out before finding the Simple solution! and while it works it's magic you can sit in the Eriba making out it's a lot of work while you have a glass or two while the solution works.

From the FAQ on thetfords website
Zitat
I get black bits in my flush, what can I do?
First clean out the flush-water tank, following our factory-specific instructions. Use Aqua Rinse Plus for ultimate freshness, clean flush-water and to keep your toilet protected.
This is how it works:
WHAT NEEDED: Household bleach + bucket/watering can
HOW:
Prepare a solution using 100ml household bleach per 10L of flush-water tank capacity. Prepare as much solution as needed to completely fill your flush-water tank.
Fill the flush-water tank completely with the prepared solution.
Leave it in for 24 hours.
Drain the flush-water tank by using the drain tube or flushing system.
Then fill the flush-water tank completely with fresh water and leave it in for 5 minutes.
Drain the flush-water tank again.
Repeat step 5+6 to make sure no bleach is left behind.
Note
Do not use together with other products.
Exceeding the stated dose or recommended duration could damage your Thetford toilet

There seems to be one common factor in this black gunge business, and that's the use of Thetford's own brand pink rinse.
We've always used the Elsan equivalent and never had so much as a speck of black anything. I looked on the net and several caravanny-type coves had solved their black gunk problem by switching from the Thetford rinse to the Elsan stuff.
I can't believe I actually Googled that.
I'm surprised some kind of pop-up window didn't appear telling me I was beyond all hope.

That could certainly be the answer as when we first got our Eriba, I bought four small bottles of Thetford liquids just to get the correct sized storage bottles to go in the rectangular spaces under the holding tank. While we were using the genuine pink rinse we got a lot of the black gunge and I ended up stripping our manual flushing system and cleaning it. I recall posting about my surprise on discovering that the plastic pump diaphragm was made of transparent plastic and not black as I had assumed. (See Post #5 here)
When the Thetford liquids were used up, I refilled the storage bottles with any other cheaper toilet chemicals I could lay my hands on (Aldi at the moment) and since then there has been no recurrence of the black gunge problem. QED

Is this still an issue, the black gunge I mean?
I seem to remember reading about Thetford Pink having a change of recipe to stop this happening.
However I have both poor memory and stupid imagination (so her Ladyship Frantic tells me) so this could be false information.

don't know whether the pink stuff changed, never used it since our clean out, just use the shower at a height above the privy
saves filling / empting the holding flush tank, cleaning the particles ect...
bi carb of soda is supposed to be a mould remover, also good for making cinder toffee scary bubbling mass hehehehe

The pink stuff dries to leave a deposit unless you wash it through - Lidl Bio Washing Liquid diluted in a hand spray works just as well for preparing the bowl - nice and slppery and also handles the tank contents as well - saves lots of money, no nasty niffs. Many MH user swear by it - guess it will work just as well in the Puck bucket, fewer moving parts.....

Well, after I thought my woes of the toilet had resolved as I flushed out the flush tank and cleaned it. This weekend away but not on EHU went to push the flush button and no pump, not even a buzz. When I left it after cleaning through it was working fine and not having done anything it has stopped. I did think maybe the it needed EHU but all the ramp pumps work fine.
