Protecting wine glasses etc. whilst in transit

We like to use proper cups, saucers, plates, wine glasses, gin balloons etc. in our Eriba, rather than the melamine and plastic collection that we used in the tent for many years with the kids. Packing them out with tea towels and other such materials is ok, but the packing/unpacking will get tedious after a few trips.

I'm looking for a solution, particularly for the glasses. Perhaps some adhesive clips on the inside of the overhead lockers, or some thick foam with cut-outs. I recall seeing a Carlight caravan many years ago with a very nice factory drinks cabinet, but I don't recall how the wine glasses were secured for towing.

There's a thread here :-Packing breakables in the caravan but I also know that the Frantones and a few others use shop bought packaging or some such that fits in the overhead lockers. Can't find that thread though.

We also use glass and ceramic crockery. I have made secure storage by gluing layers of camping foam mattress together that fit tightly in the locker bases with holes and shapes for the glasses and mugs.

Our old caravan had a factory fitted drinks cabinet and the glasses were held in place by Terry clips, with the wine glasses hanging upside down. We never had a broken glass.

I must admit to using a glass tumbler for wine. It is easier to pack and less likely to break. More importantly they are less likely to be knocked over if/when you have had a few.

You posh gits!

Common folk like us use polycarbonate wine glasses simply because they don't shatter at the slightest provocation.

We had one of those as well, they were great. We still have that old Compass caravan in our barn, and it is as dry as a bone. No problems except, we are in France and we cannot have it registered without paying a fortune. It's now filled with pool deckchairs etc over the Winter. Beryl

We use wet suit material that have been made into can covers, we insert the glasses upside down into them and store them in an especially made piece of ply with holes in them that was installed in one of our cupboards when we bought Lottie. (our caravan)

Ah, but if you liberate some Brittany Ferry or P&O glasses they are built of strong stuff. It took us 2 trips to get a set of 4 and no, I don't feel guilt because the price they charge for a glass of wine should include the glass and all

Do they play 'The Navy Lark' theme tune when you use them?

Do you mind me asking a techinical question?

Why does a set of wine glasses consist of four?

It could just as easily be two, or five, or seven. I bet most of the time you only use two (as we do), so I'd have thought two would make a set.

And if that was the case, you'd only have to have run P&O's embarrassingly lax security gauntlet once instead of twice.

Init.

If we're into 'why do's'.

Why do all microwaves hinge on the left (as you look at them)? I presume the reason they can't have the door switch aboutable is due to the interlock that stops it operating when the door's open. But you'd think some enterprising microwaver would realise they could potentially snaffle 50% of the market by offering a right hand hinged model.

We're going Brittany Ferries both ways so could acquire some glasses but should Roger be encouraging petty larceny. If the ferry companies get wind of this all Eriba owners will be tailed by security guards around the ferry for the duration of the trip.

We got a set of Luminarc crockery like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Luminarc-Evolut...luminarc+plates in France (although you can get it here). It was very cheap and we haven't managed to break anything yet - and I just keep it all under the kitchen bit stacked in a plastic sainsburys shopping basket (oops) along with other stuff without any protection. It's some sort of tempered glass but looks like normal plates. They do glasses too but they are a bit more pricey. They are often on special offer in french supermarkets. The sets are much cheaper than buying individually but you can add salad bowls and platters. They do all fancy designs but the fluted white one is the cheapest
