French Environmental Zones

France introduced environmental zones and the Crit'Air Vignette on 1st July 2016. Initially these zones were restricted to Paris and Grenoble but are now in the process of being extended. Additionally, as is already the case with Environmental Zones (Umweltzonen) in Germany there is a requirement to purchase a sticker and this applies to foreign registered vehicles also. The fine for non compliance is a hefty 98 Euros and it would be my guess that enforcement of the new regulations will be strictly enforced. The following is a short section copied/pasted from the previously given link:-

Attention, new: According to a new announcement from the French authorities, it will be possible to order a vignette for vehicles non-registered in France from 01.02.2017.
This means, that the vignette Crit’Air will be available for all vehicles, no matter in which country they are registered.
Advance orders are possible here from 24.01.2017.
Please note, that the documents of the vehicle and the documents proving an eventual technical upgrade will be needed in order to obtain a Crit’Air vignette, since they will have to be verified.
The French authorities did not give any information about possible penalties for foreign vehicles driving without the vignette Crit’Air from 15.01.2017 or 01.02.2017.

Clicking on the top tab of the link headed Shop brings one to the necessary order form. The cost is 19.85 Euros.

When I could find no link on your thread Alan I thought it was an early April fools joke ie. Crit'Air = https://www.crittercontrol.com/

Seriously though, I think this is the link :- https://www.crit-air.fr/en.html

Presumably the German sticker I purchased 5 years ago is still valid in Germany (and other parts of Europe)?

It's only Paris, Grenoble and Lyon for the moment. I can't imagine the French are going to annoy tourists too much.

Oops, obviously I forgot to insert it......sorry. Here it is now though https://www.crit-air.fr/en.html

Whilst it is true that only Paris, Lyon and Grenoble have the requirement for the Environmental Protection stickers at this time this will soon (2017) be extended to other areas. Scroll to the bottom of the page in this link to see the current and future zones. http://de.france.fr/de/info/umweltzonen-frankreich

@ Roger. The sticker that you purchased for Germany is of course still valid unless you have had reason to modify/change any aspect of your vehicle that could possibly have an influence on it's emissions. I'm not altogether sure what you are meaning by 'other parts of Europe'. The German green Umwelt sticker is applicable only to Germany nowhere else. For additional information regarding requirements for other European countries where applicable see here https://www.crit-air.fr/en/information-a...ope.html#c18231

The only reference that I can find in connection with stickers required for the Czech Republic is here the requirements of which come into effect 2017/2018. http://www.green-zones.eu/en/info-menu/e...ions-badge.html

In addition I can find no reference to the German sticker being valid in countries outside of Germany itself. http://www.green-zones.eu/en/info-menu/e...ntal-badge.html

They are, by law, needed for all vehicles, French or non-French
However, the system is not yet in place to be able to get one for " véhicules étrangers", because you have to enter registration details from your carte gris, so there will be a period of tolerance" for non French vehicles.
You get them online at www.certificat-air.gouv.fr

Also, when they do the " circulation alternée " days in Paris, véhicules étrangers are exempt

I saw a programme about them and it seems they're going to be very unfair- cars which may be older but pollute less than some younger ones being penalised so I'm guessing that for most of us there's going to be quite a bit of slack. Plus the gendarmes can't stop every car to check that it's got the right vignette. It sounds a bit like when we all had to get alcohol tests which turned out to be useless. Bryn, do you know how it applies to us? We're not in a region concerned for now. Would we just need one if we were to go to one of the cities concerned? I must ask Monsieur.

Perhaps I can answer that last question from a German aspects. The zones area in towns and cities so if just transiting past on the motorway etc then no stickers would be required. For us caravaners the situation might arise when we have set up camp and then use the car for shopping and sightseeing etc. Cars parked up have always been an easy target for wardens whether in the UK, Italy or France.
