Our form didn't have the red explanation underneath some of the boxes.

Neither did mine, Roger. I made a screengrab of the blank form and added the red script myself thinking that it might be of use to someone. What was meant by serial number and brand confused me and the process of adding Chassis number and make of car was simply trial and error on my part.

You can upload your car registration document there too. - isn't that what the browse button is for or am I being dim?

Yes you can Islay and have to. But they also ask you to repeat the information on there onto the submission form whereas the Germans do the job for you

I have absolutely no idea of how the Crit' Air will actually be implemented in practice but from what I have read so far about the scheme it appears to have had a bit more thought put into it when compared to the German Umwelt equivalent.

Leaving aside issues such as the requirement to personally add details into the application form (French) and the fact that the German disc costs considerably more and that maybe - just maybe - there may be a bit of self interest involved in both schemes e.g. adding to the Finance Ministry pocket, what I find positive is that the management and implementation of the Crit' Air scheme is being handled locally, by local authorities, and that there is room for discretion to be exercised dependent upon pollution levels on any particular day.

In effect this means that any given authority has the legislative power to determine that pollution levels are say slightly above the norm and that a prohibition on Class 3, 4 and 5 badge holders would be appropriate whilst on another day it might mean all but 'Green' badge holders.
In Germany we are now several years into the implementation of the Umwelt Zones and most, if not all, of these are now 'Green' only badge holders. I have no way of knowing the exact figures but it would be my guess that a considerable number of modern day cars are sporting a green sticker as it is which really negates the purpose of having road signs to this effect displayed, and also for the odd Hillbilly that might ride down from the hills one day spurting out black stuff from the exhaust all over the place isn't really going to make that much of a difference anyway when all is said and done. On the face of it, it would appear that the requirement for owners of new vehicles meeting Euro 5/6 emissions to purchase and display a green sticker serves only the purpose of lining the Treasury coffers. Additionally, these Umwelt Zones are 24/7 with actual pollution levels on any day or period of time not being taken into account. In that respect it seems to be one up to the French.

14 days after applying for our French Environmental Sticker, we started to wonder where it was. We've just noticed that it takes 30 days

Our German one took 3 days

Only 16 more nail biting days to go then, Roger. If it makes you feel any better, we haven't received ours yet either.

I have been looking at this issue for our summer trip and have got totally confused! I thought the EU was all about harmonisation! As far as I can tell I just need to get the German one for this year. I take it they can be bought locally in the country? obviously before entering a zone.

German Umwelt stickers can be purchased online at a cost of €15 or locally at any TUV centre at a cost of €5. You will need full registration documents. http://www.tuev-sued.de/auto_fahrzeuge/f...ausland/england

Ordering of the sticker online is via clicking on the 'Ordering of Emissions Sticker' at the bottom of the page which then brings up this page https://www.tuev-sued.de/auto_fahrzeuge/...stellen/england which is the form that you need to complete for an online application.

For picking up a sticker personally:- on the main page (first link above) you'll find a link to locating their service centres but here's a short cut to it. http://www.tuev-sued.de/hauptuntersuchun...online-anmelden

In the box marked 'Bitte PLZ oder Ort eingeben' meaning enter Post Code or Town/City just enter somewhere that you intend passing through or somewhere that is close to your chosen route that you can divert off to and it should throw up an address etc. That is of course if you want to collect a sticker in person.

Any question/problems just get back and I'll see whether I can help.

Oh, and with regard to 'harmonisation'. I think you'll find that it's the UK that does very little of that. For example, and to put it in relevance to this forum, in Europe caravans are taxed and MOT'd as vehicles in their own right. Not so in the UK.

I'm bumping this for the benefit of Blueyonder who perhaps has forgotten that she recently posted a question to which both myself and Roger have provided the requested information.
